What We Offer

Applied Materials’ VSE strategic marketing group is searching for an intern to join our team for FY 2024-2025! Our group is specially working on patterning and implant applications in new emerging semiconductor fabrication related applications. We have state-of-the-art implant tools which are the backbone of the semiconductor industry. Through novel precise materials engineering we are advancing processes such as doping, and various material properties. The position will entail the following:

• Collaborate with implant material processing groups and process demonstrations, processing wafers, measuring wafers, analyzing results, and documentation.
• Participate in development projects involving wafer processing, desire metrology and present updates in group meetings.
• Support process engineering through procurement, shipping samples, and tracking inventory functions.
• START DATE: January 2026, On-site at our Gloucester, MA location

• Available to work for 6 - 12 months.

Requirements:

• Preference for students who are currently pursuing a Doctoral degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field in Semiconductors.
• Student must be in good academic standing at their university, with a preferred GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale.

• Hands-on expertise on thin film materials characterizations techniques such as ellipsometry, electrical IV/CV measurements, FTIR, microscopy and mechanical properties testing.

• Familiarity with modeling methodologies such as FEM, Monte Carlo simulations, etc. in addition to knowledge of modelling automation techniques is a big plus

$45 - $50 per hour

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assist in the design and development of AI-driven solutions, including methods, processes, and systems for analyzing structured and unstructured data from diverse sources.
• Support machine learning model development, including data preprocessing, feature engineering, and evaluation using Python and modern AI frameworks
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into AI solutions that address business needs.
• Contribute to large language model (LLM) integration, and prompt engineering for enterprise applications.
• Develop and maintain data pipelines and automation scripts for model training and deployment, leveraging SQL and Python.
• Participate in AI experimentation and prototyping, including testing new algorithms and approaches for improving performance and scalability.
• Ensure timely delivery of AI-enabled tools and insights to support decision-making and operational efficiency.

Technical Skills

• Programming & Scripting: Proficiency in Python for data preprocessing, feature engineering, and automation; basic SQL for data queries
• Machine Learning Fundamentals: Strong understanding ofsupervised/unsupervisedlearning, model evaluation, and optimization
• AI Frameworks: Exposure to TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn for building and testing models
• Data Analysis: Hands-on experience with Pandas, NumPy; ability to clean and manipulatestructured/unstructureddata
• Large Language Models (LLMs): Familiarity with prompt engineering and integration concepts
• Data Pipelines: Basic knowledge of ETL processes and workflow automation
• Experimentation & Prototyping: Ability to test algorithms and iterate quickly
• Cloud Concepts: Awareness of AWS/Azure/GCP for deployment (coursework or projects)
• NLP Basics: Text preprocessing, embeddings, and semantic search fundamentals

REQUIREMENTS/EDUCATION:

• Master's Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Cognitive Science or a related field.
• Exposure to large language models (LLMs), prompt engineering, or natural language processing concepts.
• Experience working with structured and unstructured data, including data cleaning and feature engineering.
• Understanding of cloud computing concepts (AWS, Azure, or GCP) through academic projects or professional experience.
• Ability to communicate in writing and through presentations and a desire to evangelize AI concepts.
• Prior internship, research, or project experience in AI, automation, or data-driven solutions is preferred.

What We Offer

Applied Materials’ Ion Implantation Business Unit is searching for an intern to join our team in summer 2026! Our group works on developing plasma processing tools in ion implantation, dry etch, deposition and material modification. The position will entail the following:

• Perform numerical investigations of elements of semiconductor processing tools using commercial and in-house software.
• Analyze obtained results, draw scientific conclusions, and present at internal meetings.
• Lead small design projects involving beamline and plasma source optimization.

Requirements

• Student must be pursuing a M.S. or Ph.D. program in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
• Student must be in good academic standing at their university, with a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale.
• Experience in ion beam transport, magnet design or plasma modeling preferred.
• Quick learner.

2026 Summer Internship program start/end dates:

$41 - $50 per hour

Key Responsibilities:

• Support Design for Manufacturability (DFX) initiatives by documenting and driving improvements in new product designs
• Assist in prototyping and testing of mechanical components
• Design and fabricate components and fixtures for production and testing purposes
• Operate and maintain 3D printers for rapid prototyping

Qualifications:

• Enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
• Strong academic performance (GPA of 3.0 or higher preferred)
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Effective time management and organizational abilities
• Familiarity with CAD tools and 3D printing technologies is a plus
• Self-driven with a proactive approach to problem-solving

Requirements

• Preference for students in their final year in a Doctoral degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related field

• You may if time permits tour a Semi-conductor fab
