Develop Li-ion cells for consumer electronics applications working with a cross-functional team of mechanical, electrical, reliability and safety engineers
Develop specifications and qualification methods for cell performance and reliability
Conduct testing, evaluation, and failure analysis of cells during new product development, reliability testing, and potential field returns
Evaluate cell manufacturing technologies, supplier capabilities for design, testing and qualifications
Evaluate emerging cell technologies, suitability for consumer electronics applications, and timelines for commercial introduction
Provide build support during early NPI builds to ensure that the process can meet the design intent
Good understanding of Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), statistical tolerance analysis techniques, functional dimensioning, and GD&T
Evaluate new vendors to aid with supplier qualification
Work with vendors to mass produce cells in a cost-effective way
Work with in region thermal, validation and reliability teams to support testing at contract manufacturers and third party labs
Travel to audit vendors for supplier capability to enable new battery technologies
Domestic and/or international travel to suppliers in Asia and test labs in the US
Minimum Qualifications
MS in Material Science, Electrochemistry, or Chemical Engineering or equivalent experience
3+ years of direct experience in Li-ion battery development including components such as electrodes, electrolytes, separators, additives etc
Experience in battery characterization to meet application performance requirements and regulatory compliance
Experience in cell manufacturing with both winding and/or stacking technologies
Knowledge of process statistics such as SPC controls, quality metrics, and experience in setting up design of experiments
Experience working with offshore partners
Experience communicating with and working collaboratively with Product Design engineers and other hardware/software cross-functional functions
Preferred Qualifications
MS in Material Science, Electrochemistry, or Chemical Engineering or equivalent experience
3+ years of direct experience in Li-ion battery development including components such as electrodes, electrolytes, separators, additives etc
Knowledge of electrochemistry as it relates to Li-ion batteries in a production environment
Experience in battery characterization to meet application performance requirements and regulatory compliance
Knowledge of process statistics and experience in setting up design of experiments
Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
