About the Role:
Working with the Card Legal team, you’ll have the opportunity to learn and partner with the bright and dynamic group of attorneys who support Card, as well as build working relationships with legal professionals in several different groups across the Legal department. To succeed in this Senior Manager, Senior Counsel role, you’ll need strong legal and business analytical skills. Written and oral communication skills also are key, as is the ability to efficiently and effectively organize thoughts on legal risk, focusing on what matters in driving business initiatives forward responsibly. It’s a real plus if you have expertise in or significant experience with consumer financial regulatory laws, marketing and advertising laws,and/or general risk management.
This position will report to a Director, Assistant General Counsel inLegal and will have responsibility for:
Identifying and assessing legal risks associated with Capital One’s consumer credit card business;
Knowing your business in depth so you can translate and apply laws and legal requirements for the business teams and the business intent for the legal team and legal subject matter experts;
Actively engaging with colleagues to provide legal support as part of a collaborative and cross-functional team; and
Working with Card, Brand, the Card Business Risk Office, Corporate Communications, and Compliance stakeholders to address risks, develop creative solutions, and resolve issues.
Basic Qualifications:
Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
Active member in good standing of at least one state bar
At least 4 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in-house legal department, or government agency
Preferred Qualifications:
5+ years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in-house legal department, or government agency involving consumer regulatory experience, credit card programs or financial services
At least 6 years of legal counsel or compliance experience with consumer finance laws, regulations and disclosures
In-house legal department experience
Understanding of Regulation Z, UDAAP, consumer financial laws and privacy laws
Ability to work in a dynamic environment and flexibility to adapt to changing needs
Ability to identify and describe legal risks presented by a complex business model
Ability to build collegial and effective relationships with attorneys, business managers, creative teams, analysts, project managers, and corporate compliance professionals, and work cooperatively to resolve issues smoothly and quickly
Ability to prioritize a significant volume of work and to manage multiple, simultaneous deadlines
Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence others
