The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

As a(n) Environmental Scientist, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

  • Providing environmental support to 3M business units, including product responsibility and development teams.
  • Supporting environmental Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to develop and complete product environmental assessments that evaluate component and raw material hazard profiles and product life cycle exposure.
  • Communication of environmental hazard and risk assessment results to internal customers globally through written reports and oral presentations, under supervision of an Advanced Environmental Specialist or Manager.
  • Reviewing and interpretation of environmental test data
  • Providing technical guidance to other 3M groups involved with environmental, regulatory, and hazard communication to help ensure compliance with global regulations.
  • Supporting chemical registrations and governmental reporting requirements globally including authoring study summaries, exposure modeling, and preparation of final submittal documents.

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution
  • Two (2) years of combined experience in one or more of the following areas: preparation of chemical environmental hazard summaries, classifications, the conduct or design of environmental hazard/toxicity studies and/or environmental risk assessment (in a private, public government or military environment)

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Toxicology, Biology, Chemistry or related discipline from an accredited institution
  • Experience with evaluation and classification of the environmental hazards/risks of chemicals according to U.S. and international regulatory standards
  • Experience reviewing, interpreting and summarizing environmental study data from contract research laboratories and the scientific literature
  • Experience with the environmental hazard evaluation/risk assessment process for chemistries and/or products
  • Experience communicating results of environmental hazard/risk assessments through both oral and written methods
  • Experience with preparation and submittal of the environmental portions of chemical registrations globally
