PURPOSE & SCOPE:
As a Working student in Research & Innovation at Johnson Electric, you will play a key part in shaping the future of electric mobility by assessing components of Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) powertrains using powder metallurgy (PM). Your responsibilities will involve designing gears for BEV applications to meet the durability requirements and enhanced NVH performance. Additionally, you will validate the designs by conducting tests on test-rigs and through in-vehicle testing.

As a design engineering student, you will work closely with experienced design engineers, contributing to project execution while developing your technical and organizational skills. Part design, module architecture, tolerance calculations, simulations, system and component testing and customer contact are part of the daily business, leading to the creation of highly integrated mechatronic systems. All this takes place in a globally aligned environment. You will be part of a cross-functional team, supporting in the integration of hydraulic systems for the automotive industry by combining oil-pumps with brushless motors, controllers, software, and additional components depending on the target application. Contribute to the growth of the business by assisting in the continuous improvement effort of processes, design, analysis and testing through bench and vehicle integration.

Perform macro and micro geometry design of gears and gear systems
Optimize gear tooth root geometry using FEA and fatigue models
Design and 3D model mechanical components: gears, shafts, washers, housings, etc.
Create technical drawings and tolerance stacks according to automotive standards
Support DFMEA, tolerance analysis, and design reviews
Interface with internal prototyping and validation teams
Collaborate with manufacturing engineers to ensure process-feasible designs
Contribute to documentation and design release activities

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
Ideally more than 2 years of experience in mechanical design, ideally in powertrain or gear applications
Prior exposure to automotive environments preferred
Proficient in 3D CAD (e.g. Creo, CATIA, or similar) and GD&T
Basic understanding of gear design principles (macro/micro geometry, contact patterns) and familiar with gear design tools (KISSsoft, Masta, or similar)
Basic understanding of gear manufacturing processes
Structured working approach and ability to work in interdisciplinary teams
Fluency in English is mandatory. German language proficiency is desirable, while fluency in Chinese would be a significant asset
Strong problem-solving and communication skills

Your Responsibilities Will Be to:
Provide both technical and disciplinary leadership for a team of 10 colleagues
Drive optimization of development processes in line with applicable standards and company guidelines.
Coordinate development activities with other global sites (China, Turkey) and the central Corporate Engineering group.
Plan and allocate resources in close collaboration with Program Management and Engineering.
Conduct annual employee evaluations, set goals, and support professional and personal development.
Foster open communication and build efficient organizational structures within the design department.
Support and mentor team members to achieve project goals and ensure efficient, high-quality output.
Oversee CAD design activities, including solid models and surfaced pump concepts for production-intent designs.
Create detailed drawings using customer and internal standards, including DFMEA, tolerance stack-ups, and GD&T.
Apply common part strategies, cost-optimized design, and manufacturability requirements.
Our Requirements:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Plastics Engineering or a related technical field
Several years of experience in design & development, ideally within automotive or similar industry.
Proven track record as a team leader or in a disciplinary leadership role.
Ability to lead a diverse team with different seniority levels, personalities, and working styles.
Strong communication skills and the ability to integrate smoothly into the Aachen team culture and international setup.
Familiarity with CAD, PDM, and ERP systems.
Experience in a global matrix organization is a plus.
Fluency in English
German skills are highly preferred it facilitates daily interaction within the team and with customers.
