Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of technical engineering experience; particularly with Heat Transfer and Fluids
    • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 7+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience.
  • 8 + years experience in industry performing a thermal engineering function
  • 2+ experience leading a team of engineers, coordinating complex projects, and driving innovation in a collaborative environment
  • Understanding of thermal/mechanical design principles and predictive analysis, material selection, manufacturing processes, and use of CAD and CFD software

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Industry experience in server hardware development, data center infrastructure, or cloud computing
  • Experience in systems level thermal design including thermal simulation
  • Experience in cross-discipline design process from chip to the rack level
  • Experience managing ODM engineering deliverables
  • Knowledge of material science, design for manufacturing, and sustainable design
  • Experience with prototyping, tooling design, and high volume manufacturing

Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of thermal engineers to design and develop systems and building blocks for Azure datacenters
  • Bring clarity, create energy, and drive results in a way that inspires engineers to perform at their best and grow their career
  • Provide technical guidance, development, and mentorship in mechanical design, validation, and technical leadership
  • Recruit, hire, and grow talent to build a high performing team Develop scalable work flows with focus on continuous improvement, quality, cost, and predictability
  • Ensure high standards of engineering excellence in design and development balanced with the need for agility and time to market
  • Build relationships with key partners inside and outside Microsoft to source components, lead design strategy, ensure robust performance prediction, review manufacturing processes, and ensure adherence to regulatory, quality, and safety standards.
  • Ability to understand the ODM working relationship and drive the thermal engineering team to successfully collaborate with ODM’s to deliver products that meet specification.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems, provide technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers, and foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Drive strategy for thermal technology and design strategy with keen focus on sustainable materials with respect to their mechanical properties and re-use of common parts across generations.
  • Stay abreast of the latest trends, advancements, and best practices in thermal engineering, cloud infrastructure, and data center technologies, and propose innovative ideas to enhance our hardware offerings.
