Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor Degree or international equivalent degree AND 4+ years’ experience as a practicing attorney in the areas of advertising, marketing, video games, technology or intellectual property.
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Active license to practice law in a jurisdiction and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in legal analysis to identify legal risks in complex scenarios.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated judgement in ambiguous environments.
  • Experience working independently to meet deadlines and prioritize work requirements for customers.
  • Experience working within a global organization with diverse perspectives across multiple cultures and geographies.
  • Demonstrated continuous learning in your industry and those of your customers to increase business acumen.
  • Experience with process improvement and operational effectiveness.

Legal Counsel IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $132,200 - $232,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $165,800 - $248,600 per year.

Legal Counsel

  • Advise Microsoft’s Gaming Marketing team on all aspects of go-to-market strategy, including evaluating claims and claims substantiation; drafting and negotiating co-marketing, merchandise, and white-label agreements, intellectual property licenses and releases; and reviewing promotional offers, product packaging, SKUs, pricing and licensing plans for regulatory compliance.
  • Provide guidance on a variety of legal and business issues related to product releases, public relations, and events, including reviewing global marketing campaigns, press releases, commercial advertisements, and video game trailers.
  • Review and advise on issues related to consumer marketing and research, such as data privacy; competitive intelligence; and participant incentives.
  • Respond to regulatory investigations and consumer complaints related to advertising and other consumer protection issues.
  • Serve as a liaison between product teams and subject matter experts in trademark, copyright, publicity, privacy, product safety, and competition to advise on a broad range of issues impacting marketing and advertising strategies.
  • Serve as a marketing and advertising subject matter expert to Microsoft Gaming’s legal team, providing training and timely updates on legal developments to attorney colleagues.

Representing Microsoft

  • Identify opportunities for policy and advocacy outreach and develop Microsoft’ position on key policy matters.
  • Coordinate work with outside counsel globally and oversee efficient use of budget allocation.

Operational Excellence

  • Develop and implement processes, templates, and best practices.
  • Harness AI tools to streamline delivery of legal services and share knowledge across the legal department.
  • Propose efficiencies to budget management, and model compliance, privacy, and data security.
  • Design and conduct client legal training.

Communication:

  • Collaborate effectively within work group and across Corporate and Legal Affairs (CELA) on client issues. Organize and simplify issues and ideas in written and verbal communication.
