Role and Responsibilities:

  • You will be building and managing massively scalable database and storage systems for eBay
  • As a self-motivated and enthusiastic technical leader of our team, you will collaborate with extremely inquisitive and proficient peers leading and designing data infrastructure using your strong background in distributed systems, storage and large-scale database systems
  • You will work in an agile environment with a focus on problem solving and engineering precision. As a technical leader you are expected to assess technology problems, design efficient solutions and drive implementation to meet the business expectations
  • You will collaborate closely with peers Architects, Engineering leaders and Product Managers to develop innovative solutions that meet functional and non-functional standards and expectations
  • As a senior technical leader, you will guide junior and senior engineers in your team and also across other cloud teams in building scalable, high speed, distributed systems and advocate for meeting the design and quality standards
  • You will contribute to the design, development, testing, release, triage, bug fix, documentation and rest of the cycles in product development and maintenance
  • As a key influencer of the organization, you should bring in new ideas to adapt to technological developments and industry standard processes that will create lasting impact for eBay and its customers

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science plus 12+ years of experience or MS in Computer Science plus + years of hands-on experience in architecting, designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, distributed software database platforms.
  • Excellent understanding of computer science fundamentals, database design and architecture: Designing database schemas that are efficient, scalable, and meet the organization's requirements. This includes selecting appropriate data models, indexing strategies, and partitioning schemes. Good understanding of using various database systems (NoSQL and relational) at scale
  • Performance Monitoring and Tuning: Monitoring database performance and finding opportunities for optimization. This includes optimizing queries, tuning database configurations, and ensuring efficient use of indexing.
  • Data Security and Compliance: You should be familiar with implementing security measures to protect data from unauthorized access, data breaches, and other threats. As an eBay Database engineer you should ensure compliance with data privacy regulations like GDPR or CCPA.
  • Backup and Recovery: Implementing backup and recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and availability in case of system failures or disasters. This includes designing and testing backup procedures and disaster recovery plans.
  • Drive architecture discussions, produce well-documented design docs, and participate in design and code reviews
  • Ensure code quality and maintainability by evolving architecture and tech stack, refactoring, standards and improving build and test systems
  • Estimate engineering effort, plan execution cycles, and rollout system changes
  • Partner effectively and influence leaders within the organization and across eBay
  • Share engineering support, release, and on-call responsibilities for an always-on 24x7 site

Preferred Skills

  • Hands-on experience and expertise in a Kubernetes environment with programming C#, C++, or Java

  • Building and operating cloud-native databases in public/private cloud environments

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment in California, Washington, or New York is expected in the range below.

$187,600 - $291,500
