VME work provides the opportunity for a variety of assignments, from office-based to client-based work; from an assignment that lasts a couple of days to very large assignments working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The nature of the work is project based and covers a spectrum of industries and asset classes. The purposes include assisting clients with their corporate finance strategy, M&A transactions, and regulatory reporting amongst others. As no two projects are the same, the work requires a good deal of adaptability, flexibility and innovation.

As part of your role, you will:

  • Price financial products and derivatives, sometimes building models from scratch.
  • Develop solutions for external and internal clients based on sound quantitative models.
  • Collect and analyse financial market data and time series.
  • Prepare and present reports to support the analysis.
  • Review quantitative models developed by clients or third parties.
  • Assist senior consulting staff with analytic and presentational support.
  • Work within available budgets and tight timelines while keeping the assignment manager updated with progress.

Successful applicants will be highly numerate and analytical. You will understand the fundamentals of valuations, be comfortable preparing an independent analysis and be able to explain the rationale behind the chosen approach.
In addition, you will be well-organized in your work, be a team player and possess good communication skills. Specifically, you can explain the essence of complex models and technical concepts to the team and to clients.
To qualify for the role you must have

  • Practical experience of applying financial engineering techniques, e. g. modelling securities or derivative instruments;
  • Strong technical modelling skills, with knowledge of Excel and VBA and/or other programming tools such as MATLAB, Python or R; and
  • Demonstrable problem-solving skills.

Ideally, you’ll also have

  • Some work experience in industry, consulting or financial services.
  • A graduate degree in numerate subject, and a qualification such as CQF or FRM.
  • Capital markets or risk management experience.
  • Knowledge of simulation techniques in financial engineering or economics.
  • Experience with accounting standards such as IFRS 2, IFRS 9 or IFRS 16.

What we look for in a candidate

  • A logical approach to solving complex problems;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Responsive to client requests for information or guidance;
  • Adaptable and flexible to work on a wide range of assignments;
  • Attention to detail and a keen desire to drill down into the key issues;
  • Strong teaming and team-building skills
