Your impact

Your primary responsibilities will include working with a multi-discipline team to perform transmission and distribution overhead line design to support the issuance of stamped engineering drawings for construction to prepare the grid for the energy transition across the United States and Canada.

Activities include but not limited to:

  • Addressing complex challenges faced by major utilities in North America through thought leadership and innovation.
  • Firm understanding of key areas in Transmission and Distribution Overhead Line design, including:
    1. Development of the design criteria
    2. Route selection requirements;
    3. Line profile drawings;
    4. Creep and sag/tension calculations;
    5. Clearance requirements;
    6. Conductor & insulator selection;
    7. PLS CADD software for transmission, PoleForeman or O-Calc for utility pole design
    8. Insulator swing calculations
    9. Developing structural load cases, analysis and loading trees
    10. Developing the engineering drawings (Pole Outline, Plan & Profile, electrical fittings, stringing charts, construction schedules)
    11. Support to construction crew to complete the stringing and construction works
    12. Prepare preliminary designs, specifications and documentation for substation and/or transmission line works
    13. Review contractor design documentation and project implementation schedules/procedures
    14. Prepare and review capital cost estimates
    15. Orchestrate any field activities such as site inspection, LiDAR, surveys, observations, measurements, etc., and incorporate into client deliverables.
    16. Manage transmission project deliverables and schedule within a multi-discipline design or consulting project (substation/switchyard and/or transmission line)
    17. Maintain an ongoing working relationship with the senior multi-discipline engineers in other countries.
  • Develops client presentations, engineering reviews, financial analysis, and contract administration for the design/planning of utility systems.
  • May serve as the initial primary point of contact for clients, ensuring high levels of satisfaction while addressing issues or concerns promptly.
  • Facilitates client and/or subcontract partner meetings and conducts client presentations to showcase services and capabilities.
  • Advocates on client's behalf by actively engaging the firm to address client needs, and recommend strategic actions to optimize business development
  • Works with a cross functional team to both support the sales and proposal preparation process for new contracts and the committed high-quality delivery of those services to the client.
  • Mentor and train other employees on technical and business aspects of projects and the industry.
  • Participate in industry conferences, seminars, trade shows, and networking events to promote company services and stay updated on industry innovations and advancements.
Here's what you'll need
  • Bachelor's Accredited Degree in Engineering, Civil, Structural or Electrical Power Engineering
  • P.E. License
  • Team player with good inter-personal & communication skills and experience in developing and mentoring other staff
  • Demonstrated strong work ethic, responsive attitude, professional rigor and ability to adhere to budget and program
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of North American/U.S. codes and standards for Transmission and Distribution line facilities.
  • Subject matter expertise and ability to mentor others on PLS CADD, PLS POLE and PLS TOWER
  • Ability to work both independently and in larger project teams, including virtual teaming with overseas offices.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness and ability to work as part of a multi discipline team
  • Well-developed report writing skills and ability to prepare design reports using Company QA guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, including identification of critical path items to ensure deliverable deadlines are met.
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Professional Engineer License in California, Nevada, Texas, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, or the ability to obtain a license in various states within one year.
  • Master’s degree in engineering, Business, or experience in multiple disciplines within an electric power utility.
  • Substation structures, underground transmission or distribution design experience is favorable
  • Member of an IEEE PES
  • CAD drafting and/or 3D CAD drafting capability
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills or prior leadership experience.
  • Proven ability to lead, educate, and train a team of consultants in distribution planning studies.
  • Ability to independently solve difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
