Job Summary (Primary function)
The Environment Health & Safety Engineer provides EHS support for Incyte Research operations, as well as support EHS throughout the organization. Responsibilities include: developing, implementing and evaluating EHS programs to ensure compliance required through OSHA, EPA, NRC, DNREC, NFPA, DEA, DOT, etc.
Provide guidance related to emergency management, hazardous materials, ergonomics, State, Federal and other regulatory standards to provide a safe environment for all employees, visitors and the community. Identify, analyze and minimize exposure to hazards, prevent property losses, and create systems that encourage safe work practices.

Essential Functions of the Job (Key responsibilities)

  • Responsible for managing EHS programs that may include: chemical safety, biosafety, contractor safety, emergency preparedness, radioactive material management, office and lab ergonomics, environmental compliance and general safety.
  • Develop and implement EHS programs/procedures/systems to meet the needs of a growing company.
  • Determine all safety/environmental-related regulations and standards that apply to the operations.
  • Ability to clearly communicate requirements to research staff and provide hands-on support to identify solutions as needed.
  • Maintain records, reports and correspondence using computer databases and other software programs.
  • Schedule and conduct regular safety education and training programs for all staff. Create courses to address EHS needs. Determine best method to deliver information – CBT vs. in-person.
  • Participate in formal and informal safety inspections/audits to detect hazards and unsafe working conditions; follow up with recommendations for corrective measures & track completion.
  • Investigation of accidents/injuries to determine cause and to prepare recommendations for prevention. Assist with worker’s compensation claims and risk management.
  • Evaluate operations to identify potential hazards and mitigate proactively. Collaborate with internal groups to ensure safety and compliance while enabling research.
  • Remain technically competent and keep current in new developments within the industry.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships as a trusted resource to internal customers.

Qualifications (Minimal acceptable level of education, work experience, and competency)

  • EHS experience supporting research laboratories required, Pharmaceutical Industry experience preferred.
  • Requires four-year degree (BA or BS) with coursework in safety, environmental protection, engineering or related field.
  • Excellent organization, communication, and presentation skills. Comfortable discussing requirements with all levels of organization.
  • Proven problem solving and strategic thinking ability.
  • EHS related certifications a plus (CSP, CIH, CHMM)
