As a power systems engineer, your objective is to support the delivery of solutions that improve grid planning, management, and operations.
Your key responsibilities
We expect the power systems engineer to perform activities including but not limited to:
- Document and deliver power systems engineering functions, presenting future models and aligning to utility roadmaps and models
- Identify, extract, and process grid model data from various sources and perform data manipulation to facilitate required studies and analysis. Assess, prepare, cleanse, migrate and provide the data as part of systems implementation projects
- Create grid models and profile data that reflect various distribution scenarios given trends, forecasts, and future services
- Model future grid scenarios using planning solutions. Perform power system studies, planning & analysis activities on client’s distribution and transmission network
- Enhance analysis to translate to insights using advanced data processing functionality including machine learning and/or AI applications. Validate data and results to identify required data quality enhancements
- Perform grid analyses such as short circuit analysis, hosting capacity, feeder load management, and timeseries power flow utilizing distribution management software including but not limited to: Siemens, Schneider, GE, Oracle, OSI, and Hitachi solutions
- Present findings of analyses to broad stakeholder groups translating engineering intelligence to business value
- Document client processes, technologies, and systems to support identification of current and future utility grid systems
- Report on progress of large scale data initiatives to business leadership and identify data quality metrics supporting overall utility data strategy initiatives
- Consult utility technical and business leadership to anticipate future system, data, and organization needs within operational units. Collaborate with client leaders to develop roadmap, vision, objectives, and delivery plans for the future power systems engineering needs
Skills and attributes for success:
- Experience working at or with distribution utilities. Proven technical work experience in energy operational systems,technology systems, and/or asset technologies
- Technical competence and hands-on experience with power system studies/ network planning tools (ETAP, CYME, PSS SINCAL, Synergi, PSS/E, etc.)
- Experience working with clients throughout various parts of implementation lifecycle for software and technology projects
- Understanding of the impact of renewable energy integration on distribution networks, including the challenges and opportunities it presents for grid stability and power quality
- Advanced analytical and data processing capabilities. Proven experience translating utility data and analysis to support grid operations.
- Knowledge of network model standards and protocols in the utility sector, more generally in operational technology.
- Familiarity with common information model CIM standard
- Experience managing the preparation, design, build, and test phases of advanced distribution management system applications
- An electrical engineering degree preferably with a power systems focus. Similar or comparable education and certifications can be considered
- Ability to drive technical implementation projects to completion with the highest quality, regardless of team size or individual responsibilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially when breaking down complex structures into digestible and relevant points for a diverse set of clients and colleagues at all levels
