Your impact

People are Jacobs’ greatest asset, and we offer a competitive package to retain and attract the best talent.

In addition to the benefits you’d expect, UK employees also receive free single medical cover and digital GP service, family-friendly benefits such as enhanced parental leave pay and free membership of employee assistance and parental programmes, plus reimbursement towards relevant professional development and memberships. We also give back to our communities through our Collectively program which incorporates matched-funding, paid volunteering time and charitable donations.

We are recruiting for a member of staff to deliver projects on train performance and decarbonisation analysis. We have delivered projects in recent years in this area to help our clients progress towards achieving net zero targets in an affordable and practical way, such as:

  • Planning for an implementing the first mainline application of Battery Electric trains in Great Britain with Merseytravel
  • Advising the Irish National Transport Authority and Irish Rail to develop an optimised future rail solution in the Greater Dublin Area, leading to a current order to build new Electric and Battery Electric Multiple Units
  • Working with Network Rail, Great British Railways Transition Team and East West Rail to advise and determine strategies for future rail solutions on specific projects across Great Britain

Responsibilities:

  • Developing the optimum solutions to rail decarbonisation for specific applications
  • The potential journey times and energy consumption of specific train types running on particular routes, for example to determine the feasibility of specific new products or cascades of existing trains, develop future specifications and to optimise whole-system solutions
  • The feasibility of battery trains for certain routes and the charging facilities needed
  • The feasibility of hydrogen trains for certain routes and the fuelling facilities needed
  • The relative performance, infrastructure, energy requirements and operational impacts for different traction power options such as fixed electrification, battery electric, hydrogen and diesel, particularly in the context of future plans to replace diesel trains with a decarbonised alternative
  • Further development of Jacobs’ train performance simulation tools

Will also carry out and take technical leadership on projects in other related areas of work delivered by the Rolling Stock team, including:

  • Research and studies into the rolling stock products and options available on the market, now and expected in the future, such as high speed trains, regional and commuter trains, light rail vehicles, battery trains, hydrogen trains and applications of partial electrification and static charging
  • Calculations for a range of rail vehicle projects, with the appropriate initial training and supervision, such as for vehicle electrical loading and cable ratings, structures, mass properties and life cycle costing (including capital, maintenance, operational and energy costs)
  • Support to development of rolling stock technical specifications in general, especially for train performance and decarbonisation aspects
  • Participation in the evaluation of rolling stock tender responses from manufacturers, in general and especially for train performance and decarbonisation aspects
  • Review of design, construction, testing and maintenance documentation for rolling stock
  • Inspecting vehicles and systems in production and witnessing testing
  • Preparing input to bids for future Jacobs projects including writing technical proposals and preparing time estimates, for train performance and decarbonisation projects particularly but also for other rail vehicle projects

This role will require the candidate to work within the budget and timescale requirements of projects and to have the ability to travel in line with business needs, especially in the UK and Ireland.

Here's what you'll need
  • Specialist experience in the field of train performance and decarbonisation modelling from successful project delivery
  • Proficiency in the use of at least one train performance simulation program and the willingness to learn to use the Jacobs RAMESES program
  • Proficiency with the use of Microsoft Excel for calculations
  • A general knowledge of rail vehicles and vehicle systems from work with a consultant, manufacturer, vehicle owner, train operator, contractor or infrastructure controller
  • An understanding of, or willingness to learn about, the main features of new power supply technologies for railway vehicles, such as traction batteries and hydrogen
  • Customer focus
  • The ability to deliver high quality solutions using right first-time principles
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and influencing skills
