GAME DESIGN AT NIGHT SCHOOL

At Night School designers invent new ways to experience interactive stories. Our studio’s goal is to create world-class narrative games, and that all begins with a strong, actionable design.

ABOUT THE JOB

In our studio, designers bridge innovative gameplay with our ability to tell amazing stories. This involves working closely with narrative, writing, art, and engineering to bring these ideas to life. This role will require a deep understanding of not only high-level design principles; but of genre storytelling, strong implementation of innovative ideas, cinematic techniques, and narrative integration.

Responsibilities Include

  • Strong collaboration with cross-discipline game and studio leadership

  • Working closely with engineering and narrative to craft innovative controls that drive storytelling

  • Design and implement engaging mechanics, including player verbs, environment interactions, and upgrades that are viscerally satisfying and joyful to use again and again.

  • Develop and streamline game design workflows to boost creativity and efficiency, empowering the team to deliver top-tier content.

  • Partnering well with a global team of designers across time zones and development cultures

  • Planning, writing, and executing on cross-discipline designs

  • Improving and providing feedback on the holistic gameplay experience

Skills & Requirements

  • 8+ years of game design work with Senior experience highly preferred

  • 2+ shipped games as a hands-on game designer

  • Experience implementing gameplay content using proprietary and industry-standard tools

  • Strong game design and communication skills

  • Strong Unity and C# skills and fluency

  • Familiarity with the language of cinematic storytelling and narrative design

  • Familiarity with programming and logic concepts

  • Enthusiastic about innovation and exploring groundbreaking design ideas to tell stories in new ways within games.

  • Self-starter that works well autonomously and willing to find solutions, be curious, and ask questions when needed.

  • Guide and mentor about your expertise on an interdisciplinary team: leveling up designers under you and educating experts from other disciplines

  • Filters team creative ideas, ambitions, and goals through the lens of strategy and pragmatic next steps.

  • Receptive to and skilled at giving and receiving critique and feedback.

  • Lifelong learner who wants to bring experience and knowledge to the project and team every day.

Generally, our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. To determine your personal top of market compensation, we rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to determine your compensation in the market range. The range for this role is $60,000 - $270,000.
