Your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop and apply DIC capabilities to measure displacements, deformations, and strains in implantable medical devices under various loading conditions.
  • Support the development of a wide variety of medical devices and technologies throughout the product life cycle by performing DIC and FEA on structural mechanics problems.
  • Provide engineering problem-solving support to product development teams across the company.
  • Work closely with mechanical testing labs and computational modeling and simulation (CM&S) engineers.
  • Work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Communicate with audiences from diverse backgrounds, including formal presentations.

Required qualifications:

  • BS, MS, or PhD degree (preferred) in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
  • Required minimum years of work experience (primarily in medical device or related field): 5+ Years with BS, 3+ Years with MS, 1+ Years with PhD.
  • Experience in DIC (2D, 3D, and micro), preferably applied to implantable medical devices made of materials such as titanium, Nitinol, and biological tissue.
  • Experience with test setup design, including fixtures, load frames, and environmental controls.
  • Experience with full-field deformation measurement and FEA validation tools such as MatchID.
  • Proficiency in FEA software such as ABAQUS, COMSOL, or ANSYS.
  • Strong understanding of the mechanical behavior of materials.
  • Experience with solving structural mechanics problems involving contact, geometric nonlinearity, plasticity, hyper-elasticity, and super-elasticity, meshing models with complex geometry, computer experiments (virtual design of experiments – virtual DOEs).
  • Excellent analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills with attention to both detail (content) and big picture (context) and the ability to interpret complex data sets.
  • Technical writing skills to capture DIC and FEA work and produce high-quality reports.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification (VVUQ) of computational models of medical devices.
  • Familiarity with regulatory standards and guidelines for medical device testing and analysis (e.g., FDA, ISO, ASME, ASTM).
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks, Altair HyperMesh, SmartUQ, Matlab, and Python.
  • Computer skills in Windows and Linux. Setting up and executing simulations using High-Performance Computing (HPC) resources.
  • Familiarity with particle image velocimetry (PIV) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a plus.

Among other requirements, Boston Scientific maintains specific prohibited substance testing requirements for safety-sensitive positions. This role is deemed safety-sensitive and, as such, candidates will be subject to a drug test as a pre-employment requirement. The goal of the drug testing is to increase workplace safety in compliance with the applicable law.
