Your key responsibilities

The State Income Tax Manager will oversee state-level tax projects, including compliance and related research. You will also be responsible for leading and directing a team in managing state tax compliance and advisory services for clients.

  • Technical writing and research experience in a tax context
  • The ability to analyze client data, technical guidance, and make recommendations to engagement teams.
  • The ability to prioritize when working on multiple complex projects.
  • Strong influencing skills, and the confidence to question existing processes.
  • Willingness to travel as needed and working in a balanced hybrid environment.

Ideally, you'll also have

  • Performing tax research and preparing written tax advice

  • Reviewing and interpreting wills and trust documents to determine fiduciary tax reporting requirements confirm beneficiary allocations and identify matters that may require additional research and review by a subject matter professional such as determination of state tax nexus.
  • Analyzing proper tax treatment of various transactions, learning to identify, review and confirm accuracy in tax reporting

Skills and attributes for success

  • Collaborate with clients and colleagues to analyze tax issues, determine alternative methods of problem-solving and arrive at recommendations
  • Support managers, senior managers and PPEDs with reconciling returns, e-filing returns, and validating data in the tax system
  • Communicate with client tax liaisons, client trust administration teams and client trust officers to gather required information, to share information to support informed decision-making, and obtain instruction or authorization necessary for timely, accurate production of tax information statements, tax returns and related reporting

To qualify for the role you must have

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent experience (Accounting, Business, Finance or equivalent degree preferred)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a professional services or tax services organization and preparing federal and state fiduciary income tax returns
  • Proficient in computer software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, knowledge of trust accounting systems and tax software applications, including ONESOURCE™ Trust Tax
  • Experience preparing income tax returns with complex pass-through investments, read and interpret trust agreements
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team, assist with a variety of projects of varying degrees of complexity

The State Income Tax Manager will provide a variety of tax consulting, planning, and compliance services to a diverse range of clients operating in various sectors. Your key responsibilities

The State Income Tax Manager will oversee state-level tax projects, including compliance and related research. You will also be responsible for leading and directing a team in managing state tax compliance and advisory services for clients.

Skills and attributes for success

  • Managing and executing state income tax compliance responsibilities.
  • Monitoring and analyzing changes in state income tax laws and regulations and determine impact to the client.
  • Providing complex tax review, research, planning and consulting services to diverse clients, including federal and state tax regulations.
  • Leading or assisting with various tax planning, research, and special projects.
  • Preparing and reviewing quarterly and annual state income tax provisions.
  • Modeling various state income tax benefits and consequences using Microsoft Excel, PowerBI or Alteryx.
  • Writing tax technical memos to succinctly articulate issues, conclusions, and the analysis with respect to various state tax issues.
  • Developing and working with staff and seniors to create a team environment.

To qualify for the role, you must have

  • A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related discipline and approximately six years of related work experience.
  • High level of proficiency in state income tax code, regulations, and procedures
  • A proven record of excellence in a professional services or tax organization
  • Technical writing and research experience in a tax context
  • The ability to analyze client data, technical guidance, and make recommendations to engagement teams.
  • The ability to prioritize when working on multiple complex projects.
  • Strong influencing skills, and the confidence to question existing processes.
  • Willingness to travel as needed and working in a balanced hybrid environment.

Ideally, you'll also have

  • An achieved or partially achieved CPA qualification, certification as a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation or possess the ability to sit for or be a member of a state bar

  • We offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package where you’ll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to the business. The base salary range for this job in all geographic locations in the US is $105,100 to $192,600. The base salary range for New York City Metro Area, Washington State and California (excluding Sacramento) is $126,100 to $218,900. Individual salaries within those ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography. In addition, our Total Rewards package includes medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and a wide range of paid time off options.
  • Join us in our team-led and leader-enabled hybrid model. Our expectation is for most people in external, client serving roles to work together in person 40-60% of the time over the course of an engagement, project or year.
