The role of a Site Reliability Engineer includes maintaining and monitoring an organization’s platform architecture and components. This includes monitoring performance, scalability, security, and over all availability of the platform, as well as creating and implementing performance metrics and alerting strategies. The SRE is tasked with ensuring the highest degree of quality and reliability of the platform and its components. This requires working with engineers, developers, product owners, and other support staff to define configurations, standards, and deployments for the platform. The SRE is also responsible for performing and validating platform installations, configurations, and software upgrades. Additionally, SREs must ensure data accuracy, system performance, and continuous availability of all platform components. To perform the role of SRE at Cisco, applicants must have a good knowledge of Linux system administration, scripting, and automation, as well as strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
