The Principal Broadcast Engineer will spearhead the studio engineering efforts of our burgeoning Live Production Technical Operations team. This role will collaborate closely with our Head of Production Operations & Strategy to conceptualize, implement, and maintain cutting-edge production systems in our Herald Square studio and in the cloud. The Principal Broadcast Engineer will engage with both external and internal stakeholders to assess, recommend and implement technologies/systems that optimize our studio/remote productions. This role will be responsible for IP frameworks, signal flow / workflow documentation, integration of studio on-prem and cloud networks, and all other network architecture required to support global systems. In addition, this role will work with other internal teams to ensure seamless integration with their networks as required. Additionally, this role will oversee all on-site engineering requirements for the Live Production team in New York.Key job responsibilities
* Lead the Technical Operations team in designing and deploying on-prem, hybrid, and cloud-based production systems to create "enterprise" broadcast experiences.
* Responsible for cross-team information sharing and technical training for all new operating systems and technical solutions.
* Responsible for technical broadcast planning including the following: Network planning (acquisition, capacity, routing), Encoder validation (transport stream validation, CBR, etc), lead test broadcasts, design contingency/redundancy planning for all top-tier streams.
* Configuring and maintaining SDI video sources and distribution infrastructure and other production systems and equipment, working to design and implement on-prem, hybrid, and cloud-based production systems in Herald Square studio.
* Lead the Technical Operations team in deploying and maintaining cloud-based production systems and cloud IT infrastructure for expanded control room support, developing mechanisms to drive scalability and compliance with Amazon protocols.* Write clear and concise business narratives (e.g., proposed strategies, standard operating procedures and best practices documents), and present them to leadership and cross-functional teams in order to elevate production quality and reduce time-to-response on significant on-air issues.
* Provide technical summary and review of major events as well as technical broadcast/streaming concerns and issues, ensuring issues are added to roadmap and appropriately prioritized with future solves for each issue.* Have an entrepreneurial spirit, show excellent judgment and communication skills, be passionate about high standards (is never satisfied with the status quo), deliver innovative solutions while building a team capable of devising/implementing superior workflow systems.
- 10+ years of specific technology domain areas (e.g. software development, cloud computing, systems engineering, infrastructure, security, networking, data & analytics) experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or equivalent
- Experience communicating across technical and non-technical audiences and at C-level, including training, workshops, publications
- Extensive experience with broadcast TV standards, workflow, and technologies related to routing, switching, encoding, audio processing, and distribution; technical IT background to maintain server-based digital video and audio control systems, graphics systems, automation systems, and associated software and hardware infrastructure.
- Knowledge of distributed systems design and implementation or equivalent
- Knowledge of large scale automation and workflow management or equivalent
- Experience architecting, migrating, transforming or modernizing customer requirements to the cloud
- Knowledge of presentations and whiteboarding skills with a high degree of comfort speaking with internal and external executives, IT management, and developers
- Knowledge and experience in core routing and switching design, configuration, and troubleshooting; understanding of video stream metadata, including triggers, timecode user bits, closed captioning, etc.
