3M Analytical Chemist – Failure Analysis Engineer Specialist

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Leading failure analysis projects on films, polymers, coatings, raw materials, or product samples using available analytical tools to determine defect root causes and provide recommended corrective actions.
  • Participate in Hypothesis Matrix, DFMEA, PFMEA, Kaizens addressing customer critical issues for both NPI and commercialized products.
  • Collaborating to identify, evaluate, and prioritize product defect opportunities, coordinate training in forensics methodology
  • Operating a variety of analytical instruments including but not limited to microscopy, Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
  • Presenting project work to others in the 3M technical community utilizing statistical data enabling data-driven solutions.
  • Identifying and implementing improvements to lab operations, standard work, testing workflow/cycle time, test methods and lab capability

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a science or engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution
  • Five (5) years laboratory experience in a private, public, government or military environment

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or related discipline from an accredited institution
  • Experience working in a manufacturing setting and pace
  • Experience operating analytical instruments including but not limited to Gas Chromatography (GC), Mass Spectrometry (MS), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Rheometer Analysis
  • Demonstrated experience to analyze problems, diagnose root cause, and apply corrective actions
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of statistical and quality data analysis tools such as exploratory data analysis, Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (R&R), Analysis of Variance, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Capability, acceptance sampling, correlation and regression, and experimental design
  • Skilled in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and statistical software (ex. Minitab, JMP)

Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status).
