Senior Cryptography Expert - Director

The Senior Cryptography Expert is a recognized technical subject matter professional in the field of cryptography. Requires commercial awareness in support of data security investment opportunities and review of vendor capabilities. Developed communication and diplomacy skills are required to guide, influence, and convince others, in particular colleagues in other areas and occasional external customers. Significant impact on the area through complex deliverables in terms of architectural reviews, guidance documents, cryptography standards, management of the Cryptographic Security Center of Excellence and delivery of Citi’s Quantum Readiness Program. Provides advice and counsel related to the technology or operations of the business. While this is an individual contributor Subject Matter Expert (SME) role, the Senior Cryptography Expert will work across all lines of business, all applications, and geographies. In addition, this role will face-off to external bodies & groups dealing with cryptographic-related efforts such as NIST, BPI, ETSI, CABForum, PKI Consortium and local regulators.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and communicate a risk-based and data-driven governance strategy and roadmap for Citi data security program, in partnership with architecture, engineering, operations, information security officers, customers, and other stakeholders.
  • Provides expertise in technical domain of cryptography, symmetric and asymmetric encryption, digital signatures, hashing, Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and related key and certificate management concerns.
  • Internal and external advocate on the secure implementation of cryptography and future of data security.
  • Leads the Citi Cryptographic Security Center of Excellence and Community of Practice to address immediate security goals, cryptographic governance, improvements in practice and implementation, and strategic research and development.
  • Maintains Citi’s Cryptography Standard and liaises with related domains such as Key and Certificate Management, and Global Identity and Access Control.
  • Develop and deliver Citi’s Quantum Readiness Program which focuses on ensuring Citi’s data is protected from cryptographically relevant quantum computing threats.
  • Identify tools needed for cryptography, key, and certificate governance (lead POCs and oversee implementations).

Qualifications:

  • Experience in compliance, risk management, legal or other control-related function in large financial firms.
  • 10+ years of experience in following domains: information security, cryptography & implementation of cryptographic systems, risk management, data protection.
  • 5+ years of professional experience within data security including encryption, certificate lifecycle management, PKI implementation (and related governance & policy), access control, cryptographic key management.
  • In depth knowledge of public key infrastructure (PKI), application and data security, symmetric encryption systems, and implementation of these.
  • Detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and able to embrace change.
  • Excellent presentation and documentation skills.
  • Capacity to manage multiple activities in parallel.
  • Self-starter with the ability to define goals and strategies.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills; data driven and results oriented.
  • Thinks strategically but stays on top of tactical execution.

Critical Competencies:

  • Expert level understanding of cryptography, algorithms, and implementations & maintains/enhances knowledge through research, self-study and engagement.
  • Consistently strong verbal and written communications.
  • Solid understanding of technologies where cryptography is leveraged & implemented such as software, networking, identity systems, and data platforms.
  • Enterprise and solution oriented architectural experience.
  • Experience with public cloud technologies and their use of cryptography and key management.
