You will work alongside our talented team of developers, machine learning experts, product managers and people leaders. Our Distinguished Engineers are leading experts in their domains, helping devise practical and reusable solutions to complex problems. You will drive innovation at multiple levels, helping optimize business outcomes while driving towards strong technology solutions.

Distinguished Engineers are expected to lead through technical contribution. You will operate as a trusted advisor for our key technologies, platforms and capability domains, creating clear and concise communications, code samples, blog posts and other material to share knowledge both inside and outside the organization. You will specialize in a particular subject area, but your input and impact will be sought and expected throughout the organization.

The Distinguished Engineer will own the vision and lead the realization of new features and technology within the Perimeter Defense domain of Capital One. Perimeter Defense contains platforms that protect the ingress and egress of data within our cloud environments and include technologies such as: Anti Bot Protection, Web Application Firewalls, API Security, Edge Defense, and the logical network perimeter. The team is also responsible for the current and future state architectures of these platforms, ensuring continued protection against current known and emerging threats identified at a macro and industry level.

The platform teams in this area are responsible for the plan, build and operate aspects of all components within the domain and the Distinguished Engineer is the most senior technology expert for this space. The Distinguished Engineer will own the technical vision, and provide expert analysis and act as an escalation point and ultimate technical authority within our incident management processes. The Distinguished Engineer will also be accountable for team responsibilities around root cause analysis and long problem resolution for any critical incidents incurred.

  • Ensure the quality of technical design and implementation

  • Serve as an authoritative expert on non-functional system characteristics, such as performance, scalability and operability

  • Continue learning and injecting advanced technical knowledge into our community

  • Handle several projects simultaneously, balancing your time to maximize impact

  • Act as a role model and mentor within the tech community, helping to coach and strengthen the technical expertise and know-how of our engineering and product community

Skills include:

  • Web Application Firewalls & Web Application & API Protection platforms

  • DDoS Defense Capabilities

  • Bot Protection Platforms

  • Content Delivery Networks & Edge Compute platforms & services

  • Leveraging Site Reliability Engineering principles in the build and operation of secure and reliable systems

  • Cloud Security Platforms (AWS, GCP preferred)

  • General Cyber Security & Network Security technologies

  • Leading and resolving live cyber attack incidents

  • Perimeter architecture & third party connectivity design & integration experience

  • API security, TLS, HTTP, QUIC & similar technologies

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree

  • At least 7 years of software engineering or software development experience within the network security domain including the creation or evolution of network security tooling or automation of processes through the use of programming languages or shell scripts)

  • At least 5 years of public cloud experience (AWS, GCP, Azure)

  • At least 3 years of experience with Network Security Engineering

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related field

  • 12+ years of software engineering or software development experience within the network security domain including the creation or evolution of network security tooling or automation of processes through the use of programming languages or shell scripts)

  • 7+ years of experience in building distributed systems and highly available services using cloud computing services (AWS, GCP, Azure)

  • 5+ years of experience with Network Security Engineering

  • Relevant industry certifications such as CISSP, AWS or GCP professional network or security certifications

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
