Today
At Reality Labs we aim to bring together cross-disciplinary minds in one place to deliver on our mission: build tools that help people feel connected, anytime, anywhere. As a Product Design Engineer, you will take a critical role in developing hardware systems for VR, AR, or New Technology Initiatives. You will become part of a team exploring developing concepts through prototyping and into mass-production consumer electronics. You will work as part of a cross functional team requiring collaboration in domains other than mechanical engineering. Our teams support mechanical engineering fundamentals, prototyping skills, CAD fluency, manufacturing process knowledge, and experience designing consumer electronics.
Opto-Mechanical Design Engineer Responsibilities
  • Contribute to mechanical solutions as part of a highly cross-functional team
  • Model, build, test, and refine prototypes and characterization test systems
  • Work across the full product development cycle, from concept inception to shipping product
  • Collaborate and manage work with Asia-based Supply Chain
  • Push state-of-the-art technologies and approaches to solving complex mechanical problems while working with cross functional technical teams
  • Travel to external vendors up to 20%
Minimum Qualifications
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent industry experience
  • 2+ years of experience in related/relevant fields
  • Experience in Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), statistical tolerance analysis techniques, functional dimensioning, GD&T, and 3D/2D CAD
  • Working knowledge in material properties, such as plastics, metal, adhesive, and glass
  • Testing and analysis experience (FEA, Simulation, Design of Experiments, etc.)
  • Knowledge of high-volume manufacturing techniques (stamping, machining, 3D printing, injection molding, etc.)
  • Proven technical communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Design eye piece assembly (that may include display) that enables user experience that includes AI enabled experiences. Designing for high volume manufacturing (>10 million units per year) balancing performance, cost and industrial design
  • In-depth understanding of mechanical design as it relates to optical performance, precision engineering, and manufacturing process
  • Experience with CAD design tools, such as NX, SolidWorks, Creo, or similar
  • Experience in GD&T standards, dimensional metrology, statistics, Gauge R&R, and their application to process and design controls in high volume manufacturing
  • Experience with design for manufacturability and assembly, with a focus on cost-effective and efficient design solutions
  • Experience with applying analytical and problem-solving skills to analyze complex systems and identify innovative solutions
  • Working knowledge of optical principles, including geometric optics, wave optics, optical components, adhesives, etc
  • Familiarity with industry-standard optical design and testing tools, such as Zemax, CodeV, FRED, or similar
  • Experience working on mechanical design and productization of augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) display systems
  • Extensive hands-on experiences on NX is preferred
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical simulation tools, such as ANSYS or Abaqus. Working knowledge of material behaviors including polymers, adhesives, and brittle materials
  • Working knowledge of main optical components in one or more of the following areas: waveguide design and manufacturing, Lens design, active dimming, eyetracking
  • Knowledge of image processing and optical-display metrics, such as MTF, contrast, luminance, uniformity etc
  • Familiar with data processing and analysis tools like JMP, Tableau, Matlab, Python, R, etc
