Job Summary (Primary function)
The Animal Care Technician performs animal care and husbandry duties, including the observation, and documentation of the animals and the physical environment. The Technician also supports general vivarium operations, including facility and equipment maintenance.

Essential Functions of the Job (Key responsibilities)

  • Review, comprehend and comply with all procedures pertaining to laboratory animals for research.
  • Monitor daily animal health and welfare while performing daily room checks.
  • Perform animal husbandry duties to maintain quality and health of research animals.
  • Perform daily cage wash duties and sanitation.
  • Perform general facility and equipment maintenance and cleaning.
  • Maintain accurate records of animal health, operations, facility maintenance and support areas as required.
  • Assist with restraint, handling and manipulation of various animal species as assigned.
  • Provide support for study-related procedures (e.g., observations, dosing, sampling), as needed and assigned.
  • Receive, inspect and transfer incoming animals to permanent housing.
  • Ensure and provide for sentinel animals in each rodent housing area.
  • Operate equipment and use supplies according to safety guidelines; perform general housekeeping and adhere to safety procedures.
  • Maintain required attendance level and adherence to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned (e.g., ordering, inventory, maintenance).

Qualifications (Minimal acceptable level of education, work experience, and competency)

  • High school diploma, General Education Degree (G.E.D.) or equivalent required. Associates degree or certificate program in the life sciences will be considered.
  • Minimum of 0-2 years directly related laboratory animal experience in an AAALAC accredited facility.
  • ALAT, LAT or LATG certification desirable.
  • Ability to effectively follow verbal and written instructions and exhibit strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a professional manner with coworkers, research staff, and managers.
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Regularly required to stand; use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Required to walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Weekends and holidays required on a rotating basis.

Title and responsibilities will be commensurate with experience.
