Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develop and articulate a clear, compelling vision and strategy, inspiring the legal team and aligning with PayPal's long-term goals.
  • Provide key inputs as an industry leader and expert, staying ahead of legal trends and influencing industry standards.
  • Influence long-term success strategy of the function, driving innovation and continuous improvement in legal practices.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations, leading the adoption of cutting-edge legal technologies and best practices.
  • Manage legal risks and safeguard PayPal's legal interests, developing forward-looking risk management strategies.
  • Represent PayPal in litigation and other legal proceedings, overseeing complex cases and ensuring strategic alignment with business objectives.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 18 years of relevant work experience and a Juris doctorate or equivalent degree

Preferred Qualification:

  • J.D. or equivalent.
  • 12+ years practicing in-house or at a reputable firm, with a focus on financial services.
  • Experience advising clients on issues relating to (i) financial services regulations (e.g., state money transmitter laws, Reg E, UDAAP, and the Remittance Transfer Rule); (ii) marketing regulations (e.g., the FTC Act, CAN-SPAM, TCPA and applicable industry guidelines); (iii) data privacy laws as they relate to financial institutions; (iv) consumer protection laws; and (v) guidance from federal and state agencies (e.g., CFPB, FTC, CA DFPI, and the NY DFS).
  • Familiarity with card network and ACH rules and applicable third-party policies and guidelines (e.g., app evaluation guidelines and app marketplace rules).
  • Experience managing teams and designing support models to meet business objectives.
  • Experience engaging with state and federal agencies.
  • Ability and drive to take ownership of projects and tasks.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, adapt to change, and drive forward through ambiguity.
  • Confident self-starter with strong interpersonal and organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively provide sound legal advice, exercise good business judgment, and work well with stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with, and strong interest in mobile and alternative payments, emerging payments technology, and the payments industry.
  • Comfortable with gray areas and interpreting and applying the law in unsettled contexts.
  • Creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously, with effective resolution of conflicting priorities.
  • Admitted to, and in good standing with, a state bar.

The US national annual pay range for this role is $232,000 to $398,750
