What You’ll Do

The Lab Engineer is responsible for delivering network and system administration support, along with general operational assistance for Engineering labs situated at the RTP campus of Cisco Systems. The role involves collaborating with the GLS RTP team to offer logistical support to lab clients. Duties include equipment installation, ensuring network connectivity through configuration and troubleshooting, managing shipping, and receiving, being responsible for inventory control, providing RMA support, coordinating e-waste disposal, conducting EHS/safety inspections, and participating in ISO audits, among other tasks.

  • Installation, monitoring, debug, and maintenance of GLS-East (RTP, OTT, ATL, RCDN, BXB) Lab network infrastructure.
  • Installation of servers and related operating systems (OS)
  • Installation, configuration and troubleshooting of RTP Lab Users’ testbeds and supporting equipment.
  • Provision and support of virtual solutions such as vCenter/ESXi and or other virtualization orchestration solutions including troubleshooting and configuration.
  • Tasked with installation and assistance in deploying security updates for Linux, Windows, and virtualization systems as recommended by Cisco Information Security.
  • Maintaining excellent client relationships with local Business Unit (BU) leaders and GLS clients.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Experience with Cisco's router and switch product lines and an in-depth familiarity with Cisco Internet Operating Systems, including IOS, IOS XE, IOS XR, and NX-OS.
  • Proficiency in server-based operating systems. PC / Windows, Linux OS types and desktop and server applications: WINS, DHCP, NT domain structure, domain controllers, group policies, etc.
  • Knowledge of auto-mounters and communication protocols: NFS, TFTP, FTP, SSH, SCP, DNS, LISP, NIS+. TCP/IP, subnetting, routing protocols, Ethernet media.
  • Experience with LAN switching and configuration of VLAN’s and Spanning Tree Protocol.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Cisco certification: CCNA or CCNP, CCIE certification considered a plus.
  • Proficient understanding of Active Directory (AD) and the capability to diagnose issues with Linux AD integrations using Vintela.
  • Good communication and collaboration skills to work across multiple GLS teams, with local clients and leaders, and with partner organizations (Cisco IT, WPR, Security & Trust Org (STO), etc.)
  • Knowledge of KVM, Openstack, Docker and ESXi.
  • Knowledge of scripting and web services: Python, Bash Shell, Apache, NGINX
  • Knowledge of networking monitoring tools: Nagios, Zabbix, Wireshark
