We are seeking a Senior Director of Engineering to oversee our Quip Product Engineering team within the Productivity engineering organization. Quip works with and supports through our Slack organization. This critical role will lead a team focused on developing and maintaining essential features that enable Quip's most significant and active customers to effectively collaborate and operate their businesses. The ideal candidate will excel at:
- Providing strategic direction and support to help the team address crucial business challenges
- Mentoring engineering managers and engineers in their professional development
- Making informed decisions to optimize project priorities, team engagement, technical sustainability, and customer satisfaction
Our goal is to create an AI-powered integrated productivity suite that helps people bring more work into Slack. We'll bring together meetings, documents, tasks and email from all of your tools into one simple, pleasant, first-party experience in Slack. The experience will be thoughtful, simple, and easy to use that exceeds the bar for craft and quality.
Key Responsibilities:
- Create and execute plans to improve how we support our engineering teams through both immediate solutions and long-term strategies
- Foster an environment where team members can openly discuss and learn from technical issues
- Find and address ways to help engineering teams improve their system reliability, performance, and efficiency
- Plan and deliver system improvements that enhance features, scalability and dependability for our customers while making it easier for engineering teams to deploy code safely
- Work across departments to complete major projects successfully
- Maintain clear communication with team members and leadership at all levels
- Help other engineers and teams adopt best practices for system reliability through mentoring and guidance
Required Qualifications:
- Engineering management experience of 15+ years, with preference for those who have led frontend, backend, and infrastructure teams
- Proven experience collaborating with customers, executives, and business stakeholders
- Track record of successfully managing multiple teams and direct reports simultaneously
- Experience owning a product or product feature from zero to launch
- Strong technical foundation enabling effective mentorship and team leadership
- Demonstrated success in setting and tracking team objectives (OKRs) and metrics
- Commitment to and experience with inclusive hiring and team-building practices
- Superior critical thinking and communication abilities
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to effectively manage competing priorities and make clear decisions
- Comfortable operating at both strategic and tactical levels
- Strong business acumen and ability to balance technical and business considerations
- Proven track record managing production SaaS environments
Preferred Qualifications:
- Cloud platform experience, particularly with AWS
- Expertise in continuousintegration/deploymentand system observability
- Experience developing development platforms and services (e.g., microservices, APIs)
