Job Area:

Engineering Group, Engineering Group > Multimedia Systems

Designs and develops technologies related to the generation or manipulation of content targeted at the human senses or machine perception. These technologies include speech, audio, imaging, computer vision, display, sensing, biometrics, and augmented/virtual reality. Analyzes use cases related to multimedia technologies and performs functional decomposition to drive requirements for implementation into hardware or software. Performs system analysis and uses simulation modeling to propose algorithmic or system modifications that enable optimization of performance and power.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field and 6+ years of Systems Engineering or related work experience.

Master's degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field and 5+ years of Systems Engineering or related work experience.

PhD in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field and 4+ years of Systems Engineering or related work experience.

*Works in the lab, can use hazardous chemicals (e.g., glue, machinery).

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.

• 10+ years of Systems Engineering or related work experience.

• 2+ years of experience working in one or more multimedia technology areas (i.e., speech, audio, imaging, computer vision, display, sensing, biometrics, augmented/virtual reality).

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Owns a sub-system and independently identifies issues or patterns of issues related to systems-level software and hardware design and the implications for work within and across teams; shares a use-case scenario and targets for the market; makes overall recommendations for new technologies and to address ambiguous issues, design architectures, generate solutions, and develop models, code, and/or simulations.

• Supports design reviews for platform development; leads evaluation of system performance based on constraints and/or capabilities of design; works with multiple groups outside domain to support design integrity.

• Provides leadership and mentorship for a cross-functional team to design products and solutions and drives their implementation, meeting internal and/or external customer requirements and standards.

• Architects test environment to verify code or design for the sub-system; leads others to evaluate the impact of results, problem solve solutions, and validate software and hardware against specifications; advises multiple teams of engineers; reviews test plans; creatively analyzes the data to draw conclusions and determine what additional data should be collected; interprets results and provides feedback to cross-functional teams.

• Applies and teaches others on analyses and using appropriate tools; identifies issues and/or patterns of issues and implications for the work; makes recommendations to address issues.

• Independently identifies issues or patterns of issues in code and provides the implications and recommendations to improve performance; helps lead others to run algorithms and add a new feature to existing algorithms; implements new algorithms using software; improves outcomes by drawing connections between new and existing algorithms; drives the software architecture framework.

• Coordinates team within a specific domain and oversees the engineering and management of complex or novel machine learning data.

• Develops novel machine learning solutions aligned with proposals or roadmaps for complex products; advises and supervises small groups of less experienced engineers working together on common tasks.

• Oversees and provides technical expertise to others conducting experiments within a domain to train and evaluate machine learning solutions.

• Evaluates topologies against performance, and cost variables and uses the feasibility findings to review the high-level design; provides recommendations for route/topology that should be used to maximize performance, quality, and costs while reducing risks to the schedule and implementation.

• Displays deep knowledge in multiple areas; acquires advanced knowledge of industry trends, competitors' products, and advances in various engineering fields related to multimedia systems products and technology; reads technical articles and publications; shares knowledge and seeks best practices from open-source community; shares knowledge of multiple areas within their team and across teams working on similar products.

• Stays abreast of current and future trends to make suggestions in strategic discussions within and/or across domains about the product/technology roadmap.

• Leads technical conversations; identifies technical issues that affect project or other areas of overall system and complex synthesizes issues into an appropriate document for discussion with senior-level audience (e.g., project lead, other team leads); participates in patent application reviews.

Level of Responsibility:

• Working independently with no supervision.

• Providing some supervision/guidance to others.

• Making decisions that are moderate in impact; errors may have relatively minor financial impact or effect on projects, operations, or customer relationships; errors may require involvement beyond immediate work group to correct.

• Using verbal and written communication skills to convey complex and/or detailed information to multiple individuals/audiences with differing knowledge levels. May require strong negotiation and influence, communication to large groups or high-level constituents.

• Developing and administering budgets, schedules, and performance standards for functional area within the prescribed budgetary objectives of the department.

• Having a moderate amount of influence over key organizational decisions (e.g., is consulted by senior leadership to provide input on key decisions).

• Completing tasks that do not have defined steps; simultaneous use of multiple mental abilities is generally required to determine the best approach; mistakes may result in significant rework.

• Exercising exceptional creativity to innovate new ideas and develop innovative products/processes without established objectives or known parameters.

• Working on abstract problems in variable situations that typically require complex analysis, interpretation, or evaluation of intangible factors; directing the resolution of complex problems that have impact beyond own area; participating in corporate development of methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for projects, programs, and people.

• Occasionally participates in strategic planning within own area affecting immediate operations.
