What to Expect We are seeking highly motivated Design Engineers to tackle design and manufacturing on a challenging new mass production line geared towards next generation cell manufacturing. You will be working alongside engineers to develop an advanced new product and be among the first individuals to work on cutting edge equipment design within Tesla. What You’ll Do - Lead design of specific sub-assemblies on next gen calendaring, lamination, and slitting equipment with focus on design robustness, precision, and serviceability
- Closely collaborate with external equipment integrators on custom automation equipment focusing on optimizing the design, layout, and function of the equipment
- Lead design reviews at different design phases to develop specifications and accelerated test plans to validate the product for its determined lifetime
- Develop assembly procedures, design fixtures, and equipment for testing and calibration in prototype and production environments and verify performance
- Design creative mechanisms for precision motion on large high throughput equipment
- Perform load calculations to determine sizing of actuators, transmissions, and bearing elements
- Apply analytical methods including calculations and simulations for the design and optimization of structures and mechanical components
- Fabricate prototypes, iterate rapidly, and advance your concepts through to volume production
- Collaborate with manufacturing engineers, EHS, electrical, maintenance, and tool install teams to discuss assembly, commissioning, service, and incorporate relevant improvements in design
- Drive Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Perform tolerance analysis to determine system impacts of assembly fits and backlash and develop specifications for custom automation equipment
What You’ll Bring - Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of experience in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or similar
- Experience in high volume equipment design and automation. Roll to roll equipment experience a plus
- Experience developing manufacturing processes for new and unique products
- Experience transitioning products from prototype to mass production
- Proficiency in developing automated manufacturing equipment, fixturing and tooling in 3D (SolidWorks preferred, Catia is also a plus)
- Experience generating unique designs through innovation and creativity to solve engineering challenges
- Significant experience in leading design reviews from ideation to production.
- Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally (~5%)
- Experience in high volume manufacturing involving roll to roll / calendaring / battery manufacturing is highly desired
