As ayou’ll have the opportunity to perform a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant including maintenance of equipment and quality control testing. You’ll contribute to the success of our program with efficient preventive maintenance and effective solutions to challenges that may arise in municipal facilities. You’ll operate treatment facilities to control flow and processing of water/wastewater, sludge, and effluent, observe variations in operating conditions, and interpret meter and gauge readings. You’ll also collect samples, maintain shift logs and perform other duties as required. Most importantly, you’ll take action to ensure the safety, health and well-being of you and your team.


Specific Responsibilities of the Lead Operator:

  • Supervises the operation of the wastewater treatment plant or plant process on an assigned shift
  • Performs duties of Project Manager or Operations Supervisor in their absence
  • Gives instructions and assignments to plant operators as required
  • Maintains discipline and ensures proper procedures are followed
  • Performs operations and maintenance activities including taking samples and performing routine laboratory tests and analyses
  • Inspects equipment to locate needed repairs and maintenance
  • Makes process control adjustments, reads gauges and meters, records data, prepares necessary shift and log reports
  • Determines proper chemical flow rates
  • Participates in the training of plant operators, Assigns operators to designated shifts, Prepares operator's monthly work schedule, Assigns replacement operators during emergency situations, prepare data for required reports
  • Conducts weekly safety meetings
  • Clearly communicate verbally and written
  • Present yourself in a professional manor with staff, contractors, customers, and mostly with the client
Here's what you'll need
  • Minimum high school education
  • Operations and process controls experience
  • Ability to effectively train operators
  • Operator certification wastewater treatment level 2 to 4 in the project’s state (Oregon) or able to obtain reciprocity
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of wastewater treatment plant operations; operating principles of valves, pumps, and motors; principles and methods of water analyses, and bacteriological and chemical sewage analyses; effects and problems of industrial waste in wastewater treatment process; principles of supervision and training; safe work practice
  • A valid driver’s license with no major infractions
  • Must be able to walk up to 3 miles per 8-hour shift
  • Must be able to ascend and descend up to 1,100 stair steps per 8-hour shift

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

The physical and environmental demands required to perform the essential duties of this position include standing, walking, sitting, coordination, balance and agility demands, which may include the ability to stoop, kneel, squat, grasp, reach, perform repetitive hand movements. Additional demands may involve a specific level of dexterity, grip strength, climbing and cardiorespiratory demands. The work areas may be indoor, outdoor, have loud noise, active machinery, high pressure fluid systems, electrical equipment, confined spaces, heights and depths, fumes, air borne particles, noxious gases, and chemicals. The use of appropriate safety equipment will be mandatory in these areas to prevent hazardous contact.
