Microsoft Software Engineer - Linux Kernel

Our team plays a key leadership role in Azure by driving Linux and open-source technologies, solutions, and strategy. In this role, you will work closely with internal and external partners, coordinate design and coding across multiple projects, and interact with teams in disparate geographic locations. You will work closely with upstream open-source projects, representing Microsoft as an efficient community partner and contributor. You will be developing cutting edge accelerations and optimizations to power future public and private clouds. You will define and push the limits of innovative technologies -- working with the latest hardware, the largest servers, and even larger data centers.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Rust, Bash or Python

    • OR equivalent experience
  • Experience using core Linux command line utilities and managing code with git
  • Knowledge of how to configure, build, and test Linux kernels

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role.
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficient communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Desire to collaborate with open-source communities. Existing interactions with the Linux kernel community are a huge plus.
  • Experience automating workflows with GitHub Actions, Azure Pipelines, or similar technologies
  • Familiarity with the Linux kernel’s various forms of user space APIs and can demonstrate knowledge of commonly used system calls
  • An interest in learning about Linux kernel internals to become more involved with kernel development
  • Experience working with On-call responsibilities

Responsibilities
  • Enhance and optimize Linux kernel build and validation systems within Microsoft.
  • Leverage and develop open-source test suites to expand Linux kernel test coverage, ensuring thorough validation of kernel functionality.
  • Triage, debug, and resolve Linux kernel bugs discovered during validation and/or in production environments, contributing to overall system stability.
  • Collaborate with teammates and partners to automate and refine the build, testing, and deployment pipelines for Linux-based applications.
  • Automate and streamline build, testing, and deployment processes.
  • Contribute to the creation and upkeep of tooling that supports development and validation efforts.
  • Rotation in a live site operations virtual team with on-call duties (split between a primary and backup role) from 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM PST
  • On-call requirements that impact off-hours (nights/weekends) will be offset with weekday time off
