The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a tool engineers use in product design and product performance analysis across nearly every industry. We are looking for an engineer who will assist customers in defining tape and adhesive characteristics within their FEA models. Unlike many metals and other standard engineering materials that can be simply modeled as linear-elastic materials, adhesives exhibit more complex types of mechanical behaviors when exposed to different loading conditions and thus require advanced testing and material calibration methods. 3M is uniquely positioned to characterize adhesive materials and provide advanced material models (Material Data Cards) in a format compatible with a variety of finite element modeling software and now would like to extend capabilities with a new FEA engineer focusing specifically on IATD solutions to support customers globally.

  • Increasing specification penetration in selected markets by actively assisting customers during their design-in process.

  • Advancing solutions by applying in-depth knowledge of customer needs, market and competitive offerings.

  • Characterization, Modeling and Simulation of adhesives and tapes, creating & validation of material data card, and customized FEA support for customers.

  • Working closely with technical teams to ensure FEA readiness for successful new product launches.

  • Shaping industry and strengthen 3M’s competitive position by publishing white papers and technical documents in relevant media.

  • Educating Application Engineers and sales professionals that need to understand the basics of FEA and follow the standard operating procedures as they support customers interested in FEA and make them ready to discuss market-focused context in FEA conversations with customers in priority market segments.

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree orhigher (completedand verified prior to start) from an accredited institution

  • Three (3) years of work experience in finite-element-based modeling and simulation in a private, public, government or military environment

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, science, or mechanical engineering discipline from an accredited institution

  • Experience in modeling and simulation with tapes and adhesives in a private, public, government or military environment

  • Knowledge of using various modeling skills, advanced FEA skills like transient, fatigue, and non-linear analysis

  • Experience in material characterization

  • Exceptional communication skills, ability to translate complex technical information into customer’s language

Work location:

  • Hybrid Eligible (Job Duties allow for some remote work but require travel to Maplewood, MN at least 3 days per week)

Please note: your application may not be considered if you do not provide your education and work history, either by: 1) uploading a resume, or 2) entering the information into the application fields directly.
