Your key responsibilities

As a Tax Lawyer in our Private Tax group, you will lead and oversee a variety of complex tax reorganization engagements while delivering innovative planning solutions for our private entrepreneurs and their corporate structure. Some of the common tasks will include:

  1. Facilitating the transfer of family businesses across generations, including comprehensive estate planning.
  2. Managing intricate tax reorganizations in buy-sell scenarios, which involves drafting tax memorandums, developing step plans, and reviewing legal documentation.
  3. Evaluating tax representations in share purchase and asset purchase agreements.
  4. Integrating key employees into shareholding structures.
  5. Drafting of deeds of trust.

Skills and attributes for success

• Strong willingness to develop knowledge of corporate tax planning opportunities and reorganizations for private clients, corporations, and individuals.
• Proficiency in drafting and executing step plans and tax memorandums, along with conducting relevant tax research.
• Ability to collaborate with partners and senior tax practitioners, actively participating in client calls to clarify underlying issues and present solutions.
• Commitment to staying updated on new tax developments and regulations.
• Willingness to work collaboratively in team to challenge each other to find innovative solutions for our clients and support the overall success of the group.


To qualify for the role, you must have

• A Law degree and be called to the Bar, licensed to practice in the province of Quebec.
• Completion of the CICA In-Depth Tax Course or an LLM in Taxation (preferred).
• A minimum of three years of Canadian corporate tax experience, with a focus on private clients.
• Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to pivot quickly between projects, such as internal reorganizations and transactional tax issues.
• Experience in researching and writing using electronic tax tools.
• The ability to work independently within a team environment while delivering high-quality client deliverables under tight deadlines.

This role interacts with external clients and internal stakeholders nationally and internationally. Professional level French English bilingualism is required.
