Job Description:
Reporting to the National Leader, Tax Services, the Tax Manager is responsible for the ongoing tax relationship management of an assigned group of corporate, personal, trust and estate tax clients, which includes ensuring that the tax returns are filed in an effective and timely manner.
The Tax Manager works closely with advisors and their clients, to identify appropriate tax planning opportunities, along with supporting external advisors throughout the implementation process carried out. The Tax Manager provides day-to-day direction and oversight to full-time analyst staff (CPAs and CPA Students).
Hybrid Scheduled Role:
Tax Managers split their work week between our TD Tower, Pacific Centre office location in Vancouver(4 days a week)and home office based on pre-scheduled days during astandard 37.5-hourwork week. In addition, this role requires significant excess hours, during the very fast paced Trust and Personal Tax Filing Season (March & April). We offer a flexible work environment outside of tax season.
Specific accountabilities include:
Detailed review of date of death, estate, trust, personal income tax returns for assigned clients in a timely and accurate manner.
Preparation or review of investment holding company returns, including the accounting and GIFI Financial Statements.
Preparation of complex tax returns, as required, for senior tax management team.
Client relationship management of assigned client files.
Obtaining CRA Online access for private business interests held in Private Trust fiduciary accounts and performing duties as a delegated authority (Level 3) and/or signing officer of corporation.
Operational oversight of a Senior Tax Analyst (CPA) and Analyst (CPA Student), as assigned.
Providing second-level review of returns prepared by Analysts.
Managing the risks associated with private businesses held in estates and trusts.
Analyzing estate/trust-held private business financial results, including recommending and/or implementing any annual shareholder tax planning required.
Handling the day-to-day tax administration and management of private businesses and holding companies in accordance with policies and procedures.
Attend shareholders and directors' meetings.
Reviewing corporate minutes, dividend payment analysis and providing recommendations.
Analyzing pros and cons of winding company up compared to distributing shares or property to beneficiaries, including understanding of pipeline and hybrid scenarios.
Assisting and liaising with external tax and legal advisors, with corporate tax planning, reorganizations, amalgamations, and wind-ups.
Identifying need for business valuations and reviewing valuations prepared by external firms.
Reviewing tax assessments and reassessments and making appeal/non-appeal recommendations to Senior Tax Manager.
Preparing or reviewing tax risk analysis on estate distributions for sign off by Senior Tax Manager.
Staying abreast of tax developments and conducting initial research on client tax matters.
Maintaining a good working relationship with our TD Wealth partners for assigned client files.
Education/Accreditations:
Accounting designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA).
Enrollment in or completion of Trust & Estate Practitioner Designation (TEP).
CICA In-Depth Course (Part 1, 2 & 3)
Qualifications/Skills/Experience:
5+ years as a professional accountant.
Recent experience, in a relationship management role in a medium to large sized accounting firm or Trust Company.
Experience reviewing personal, trust, estate, and investment holding company tax returns.
Thorough understanding of personal and trust tax compliance requirements.
Knowledge of personal and trust tax law.
Excellent client management skills.
Effective time management, organizational, and communication skills.
A general understanding of cross-border US income and estate tax matters.
Fluency in English and French, preferred.

Special Project Pay (SPP) for hours worked more than 37.5 hours/week, at 1.5x hourly effective rate, during the pre-defined busy season for the PT tax business. The pre-defined busy season period is reviewed annually and communicated to all qualifying tax employees prior tocommencement.
