Storage and Data Protection (SDP) group Vmware Cloud Foundation Organization offers easy-to-use SaaS solutions to provide Disaster Recovery (DR) and Ransomware Recovery(RWR) for vSphere-based Software Defined Data Centers (SDDC). These products are architected to work well with other VMware Cloud solutions, such as VMware Cloud on AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform.SDP’s Cloud Platform Infra team is responsible for packaging and build tools. This team owns everything from compilers, build tools, Linux distros, 3rd-party packages and has real influence in the distributed system design of the DR/RWR projects. This team steers the direction of CloudDR/RWR standard development environment. You will take ownership of meaningful, big-picture projects and springboard an impactful career. To be clear, this is not a DevOps position. We are looking for individuals with strong coding skills that can quickly understand and isolate problems in areas of code that they have never looked at before. Be it, diagnosing/fixing potential security vulnerabilities, interfacing with security and open source compliance teams, evaluating compiler upgrades or being that last resort in helping someone with a compilation issue.
This job will be in person on the Palo Alto, CA campus.
Responsibilities:
You will work as an Individual Contributor in SDP Cloud Platform Infra team
You will be evaluating and updating compilers, build tools, Linux distros, 3rd-party packages
You will be using security scanning tools and resolving issues that comes up
You will be building and packaging to ship products safely, predictably and efficiently
You will observe existing developer environment/usage and identify optimization that helps in engineering productivity
You will engage with various teams to collect requirements and implement them
You will do hands-on coding and code reviews
You will provide functional guidance to junior team members
You will help engineering development team members with root cause and corrective action of any issues/blockers related to build/packaging

Required Skills:
Very strong Linux fundamentals (e.g. you can build custom Docker container, EC2/GCP instances, OVAs and can explain why something is not working correctly). If you have spent quality time with more advanced distros (e.g. Arch, Gentoo, etc.) then we’d like to talk to you.
Hands-on experience working with one of the public cloud platform like AWS, GCP, Azure
Strong fundamentals in at least 2 of these languages
Python
Golang
Java
C
Shell scripting
Minimum Degree and Experience Required:
Bachelors and 12+ years of related experience; at this level a postgraduate
degree is typically expected or
Masters degree and 10+ years of related experience or
PhD and 7+ years of related experience
Nice to have experience in:
Python packaging
Golang build systems
Gradle
Custom packer plugin experience
GRPC and protobuf emitter plugins
Crossplatform tooling familiarity (e.g. macOS vs. Linux and aarch64 vs. Amd64)
Coverity, Blackduck, Wazuh, Fluentd
Hashicorp Vault
Node.js
Designed a complex build system (e.g. Makefile, Meson, CMake, Gradle, Bazel, etc.)
Compensation and Benefits
The annual base salary range for this position is141,000 - $225,000.
This position is also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus in accordance with relevant plan documents, and equity in accordance with equity plan documents and equity award agreements.
