The Role

The Design System Product Manager sits at the intersection of design, engineering, and operations, responsible for managing a new, in-progress Goldman Sachs design system (“GSDS”) that will serve as the foundation for the firm’s digital properties and visual identity. The Design System Product Manager is accountable for defining the long-term strategy of the Design System (Figma Toolkit + UI Toolkit + Digital Publishing Toolkit) and driving its adoption across the firm.

Strategy and Governance

1. Strategy and Roadmap:

  • Define the 2-3 year strategy for the GSDS
  • Translate the strategy into concrete OKRs across the 3 products

2. Backlog prioritization

  • Create an intake process and define prioritization framework
  • Ensure critical incoming feature requests are prioritized across the board
  • Look out for other investment areas that need to be prioritized (e.g. team efficiency, regulatory requirements, non-functional areas)
  • Define the ROI for bigger investments to ensure a right balance between high-impact (commercial or adoption) and implementation cost

3. Documentation

  • Ensure the consistency of documentation across the GSDS
  • Implement a process to keep all docs up-to-date and of high-quality

4. Contributions

  • Document a governance model for contributions to the GSDS
  • Actively scout and manage the absorption of components that should be transferred into GSDS rather than owned by individual app teams

5. Extensions

  • Define the guidelines that app/platform teams should follow to create and maintain business-specific extensions to GSDS
  • Conduct periodic check-ins with flagship web properties to review that their extensions adhere to GSDS guidelines

Delivery and Adoption

1. Stakeholder Engagement and Advocacy

  • Identify and work with a representative spectrum of stakeholders
  • Advocate for using GSDS across all platforms (including mobile, low-code / no-code)
  • Check in regularly with the sponsors

2. Adoption Driving

  • Roadshow GSDS at different forums (internal and possible external) to raise product awareness
  • Define and execute partnerships with externally-facing web products
  • Identify and track non-adopters and work with them to understand the gaps and evolve GSDS as needed

3. Communication and Training

  • Use weekly status meetings and status reports to report on progress, drive accountability, and raise risks/headwinds early on
  • Publish posts and newsletters to inform GSDS customers about major releases, roadmap changes, or any other updates that need to be broadcast
  • Co-ordinate training aimed at graduates and experienced hires in order to introduce them to GSDS

4. Versioning and Releases

  • Define a coordinated versioning strategy across GSDS constituents (including publishing to other brand guidelines portals)
  • Ensure ongoing compatibility between Figma and code - where deltas exist, these must be tracked with a plan to address
  • Have a QA process in place to ensure implementation reflects design
  • Define release scope and plan (both beta and final)

5. Metrics

  • Define and implement metrics on usage, support, and customer satisfaction (includes conducting surveys)
  • Use a data-driven approach to periodically re-evaluate areas of investment (e.g. prioritize high-usage / high-support components)
  • Ensure both day-to-day support and the long-term engagement model are geared towards reducing support and improving customer satisfaction

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in digital product manager roles; delivering products with non-trivial engineering components, ideally in the web application, component library, or product marketing spaces
  • Excellent written communication skills, is familiar or comfortable expressing business and engineering plans in multi-page narrative format
  • Strong verbal communicator with the ability to translate strategic thinking into compelling, concise, and persuasive arguments and recommendations
  • Proven leadership abilities, with demonstrable skill leading through influence, building consensus, and managing up to senior/executive-level stakeholders
  • Ability to connect with and build relationships with marketing and business leaders across the organization
  • Entrepreneurial and inventive problem solver; curious and passionate about all areas of marketing
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and thrive in a dynamic fast-paced environment
