The Principal Datacenter Electrical Engineer will support Canada, providing key input to other organizations and stakeholders. The Principal Datacenter Electrical Engineer will be a professional electrical engineer (PEng in Canada) with extensive experience in datacenter electrical engineering, design, construction and operations for the Canada market. You will manage, review and coordinate the delivery of complex datacenter electrical systems, power distribution systems and backup power systems. You will be responsible for managing our hired A/E consultants ensuring they engineer and design to Microsoft technical standards and requirements for all projects in Canada. You will also work on the technical review and analysis of leased and colocation datacenters of external providers for compliance with Microsoft requirements as required

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • 12+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 10+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in designing, operating, and commissioning mission critical electrical distribution systems, from high voltage (HV) to branch circuits.
  • 5+ years of experience specifying power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, and automatic/static transfer switches.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 12+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 10+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations
  • Detailed understanding of relays, protection schemes, high-voltage distribution system, power and distribution transformers, earthing and switching
  • Experience with power system analysis and engineering software packages
  • Ability to manage, prioritize and successfully execute multiple concurrent mission-critical infrastructure projects
  • Ability to lead teams of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large datacenter environments
  • Capable leader with willingness to collaborate and work cross-functionally to maximize business results and positive customer experiences
  • Experience managing both internal and external vendors, with a proven ability to manage and monitor progress to ensure objectives are achieved for outsourced project efforts

Electrical Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across Canada is CAD $135,800 - CAD $253,000 per year.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Microsoft’s global electrical engineering team to understand and develop the datacenter (DC) electrical designs from Basis of Design (BOD) to Issue for Construction (IFC) for new projects in Canada.
  • Lead and direct A/E consultants in the design and coordination of the electrical systems with other disciplines, associated power and overall electrical topology for our datacenter builds
  • Responsible for leading electrical workgroups with representatives from consulting firms along with key stakeholders within Microsoft
  • Manage all power system designs during the design stages, equipment procurement, bidding, manufacturing, delivery and installation on site. Identify and resolve issues raised by the construction teams and various stakeholders
  • Interface closely with internal procurement team, manufacturers and the global and local engineering teams to deliver the electrical solutions needed for each project
  • Interface closely with internal construction management team and external contractors to support electrical construction activities to ensure Microsoft technical requirements are met.
  • Interface closely with internal and external commissioning teams to ensure testing and verification activities demonstrate compliance with Microsoft technical requirements.
  • Responsible for specification and drawing development, detailing the sequence of operation for the electrical systems and overall drawings and specifications for our electrical topology
  • Technical review and analysis of the lease and colocation datacenter space from external providers for compliance with Microsoft requirements
  • Assist the Operations teams with electrical system and equipment strategic improvements, workingcloselywith equipment vendors and suppliers.
  • The position will require some travel to sites for “Factory Witness Testing”, equipment and engineering vendor interaction in the design process, as well as final commissioning of the installed systems.
