You’ll be accountable for schedule and technical quality of challenging engineering tasks in accordance with client expectations, scope, budget, and schedule.

Working with a team of project managers, engineers, and support staff you will provide owner’s engineering (OE) services for electrical and gas transmission projects for an established Jacobs utility client.

Here’s what you’ll need

We are seeking an innovative Senior Civil Engineer to help us deliver electrical transmission and distribution projects and renewable generation projects in North America for a large Midwestern and South-Central utility company. The role will require providing owner’s engineering services to electrical and gas utility clients. OE services range from conceptual through final design, including coordination of general civil plans, grading, access road layouts, drainage and stormwater management plans, utility plans, erosion and sediment control plans, related permitting applications, specifications, and quantity takeoffs.

Here's what you'll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited university.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer or ability to obtain within six months.
  • 10+ years of experience in civil engineering for utility clients, including one or more of the following facility types: electrical transmission and distribution, onshore wind, solar, electrical substation, thermal generation, gas transmission and distribution pipelines.
  • Experience in civil engineering aspects of utility projects. Focus on site plan layout, geometric design of access roads and driveways, grading, drainage, coordination with other disciplines.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Work effectively with multi-disciplinary global project teams, clients, and other stakeholders.

  • Provide technical direction and review of designs developed by third party engineering firms.
  • Review existing client standards for incorporation into program and project delivery.
  • Review designs for cost-saving opportunities and consistencies in design.
  • Develop list of potential enhancements to processes and designs. Incorporation of such enhancements will vary depending upon the status and schedule of individual projects.
  • Develop conceptual designs and Scopes of Work for projects undergoing regulatory approvals.
  • Develop project estimates, based on design maturity, for use in comparing contractor bids.
  • Respond to contractor requests for information RFI.
  • Attend and participate in project pre-bid meetings.
  • Perform a technical review of bids received and make recommendations on most qualified bid.
  • Attend public information meetings as required.
  • Attend construction kickoff meetings.
  • Lead constructability meetings with construction oversight team.
  • Guide the project through the engineering activities in the stage gate process.
  • Collaborate with the system planning office, the operations business unit, and other appropriate stakeholders during the planning phases.
  • Provide engineering oversight of deliverables during entire stage-gate process in collaboration with third-party engineering providers, including design packages, project estimate, and other deliverables.
  • Review As built drawings and approve them when finalized.
