About the role

This hands-on leadership position involves directing the activities of a multi-disciplinary laboratory and scientific consulting service group. You will be part of a high-performance team responsible for the design, execution, and reporting of forensic failure analysis investigations and materials and chemicals characterizations for medical device components and their associated devices. This critical role requires leading best-in-class analytical laboratory practices and rigorous, intelligent material interrogations in collaboration with internal and external partners.



Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead and Inspire:Guide, coach, and develop a high-performing team of consultants and laboratory analysts. Foster a culture of safety, data integrity and excellence.
  • Drive Innovation:Oversee the development of complex analytical lab services, from initial inquiry through providing professional technical deliverables.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally:Work closely with senior technical leaders, project management, and interdisciplinary partners to achieve organizational goals.
  • Ensure Quality and Compliance:Understand and navigate external and internal requirements for laboratory operations and data integrity. Champion continuous improvement and best practices.
  • Solve Complex Problems:Mentor department teams to develop creative solutions to high-complexity materials and chemistry evaluation challenges.
  • Build Strategic Partnerships:

Required qualifications:

  • University technology degree in Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science Engineering.
  • 12+ years of work experience in the medical device or related field with a BS, 10+ years with an MS, or 8+ years with a Ph.D.
  • Proven experience in leading and a medical device materials analytical laboratory group that provides non-evolving -standard analytical services, e.g., investigative, supplier material change evaluations, analytical method development and validation, and R&D pharma analytical.
  • Leadership of an analytical laboratory team of at least 20 members. Stewardship of at least $4M of annual department operating expense budget.
  • At least 5 years of work experience in an analytical laboratory department that provided cGMP and GLP compliant operations and services as well as R&D services.
  • Provision of analytical services to commercial product and new product development teams.
  • Proficient in analytical laboratory management practices. Strong lab operations architect. Strong failure analysis investigator.
  • Demonstrated strong cross-functional collaboration, influence without authority, and project/task management skills. Passion for understanding and solving problems for lab customers.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in analytical service laboratory management within a medical device company.
  • Experience in hands-on execution of scientific or engineering analyses in a laboratory.
  • Strength in advocacy of meaningful laboratory contributions to the business.
  • Highly creative problem solver with a sense of urgency, and ability to develop solutions to diverse lab operations problems.
  • Strong personal credibility and excellent communication skills.
