Essential Functions of the Job:
The Tax Senior:
- ensures that all EY independence and client acceptance requirements have been met with respect to client engagements;
- in respect of tax compliance matters, handles a portfolio of clients requiring tax compliance services. This may involve developing budgets, management of assigned engagements, directing/monitoring engagements and responding to client needs. Participate in managing a compliance group by assisting with forecasting future compliance work, delegating work effectively, and resolving staffing issues. Maintain continuous interaction with clients and managers, manage expectations and ensure outstanding client service. Team with tax professionals to provide comprehensive tax solutions;
- in respect of tax advisory matters, produces draft memoranda or opinions advising clients on tax advisory matters;
- regularly reviews his/her book of business to ensure that billings are done within a timely fashion, that accounts receivables are collected and that ERPs are appropriately set;
- assists in training and motivating Staff 1 and Staff 2 personnel and client serving associates;
- assists in the preparation for and/or delivery of marketing initiatives as a representative of EY as required by management;
- where possible, seeks to improve processes used within the Tax Department; and
- timely and accurately reports time spent on each engagement.
Knowledge and Skills Requirements:
- Knowledge of tax compliance related issues for Barbados and the territories comprising the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States;
- With respect to tax advisory matters, be able to research complex tax issues using statute, case law and practice, and apply results to specific client needs and be able to draft and review memoranda or opinions dealing with complex matters for submission to management for review;
- Determine all information required to ensure/complete accurate tax compliance products within the budget. Formulate a plan to gather/communicate information. Determine areas of exposure and adapt to challenges in the compliance process;
- Provide timely and high-quality services and work products that exceed client expectations;
- Help to develop and guide staff and other junior tax professionals by providing effective performance feedback and ensuring team responsibilities are consistent with skills and developmental goals;
- Build on technical competence by keeping up to date on trends, developments and technical authorities and apply them to moderately complex situations;
- Demonstrate professionalism through a positive and cooperative attitude and maintain the confidential and proprietary nature of client relationships and related work products;
- With respect to tax compliance matters, be able to analyze financial statements to determine the items to be adjusted in the preparation of the tax computation, returns and tax provisions and be able to apply the relevant tax legislation for the respective territories and relevant accounting standards in tax disclosure; and Seek to effectively review and resolve outstanding issues/matters arising before providing files for manager review.
Supervision Responsibilities:
The Tax Senior generally works under the guidance of a Tax Manager but may also be called upon to work directly with Senior Managers or Directors within the Tax Department. Each of these Supervisors may assign work to the Tax Senior and review the work product.The Tax Senior would assist in guiding the junior staff within the Tax Department.
Other Requirements:
The Tax Senior may be required to work overtime in the weeks leading up to filing deadlines. As such, it is anticipated that, subject to certain exceptions, leave may not be freely available at this time.
A Master's degree in tax law or fiscal economics.
Experience:
- At least 3 years of relevant experience within a similar role, with exposure to tax compliance and/or advisory work.
- Working knowledge of current and emerging tax issues, with the ability to apply knowledge.
- Working knowledge of tax laws.
- Commitment to learning and improvement and excellent communication skills.
- General knowledge or coursework in tax laws.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.
- Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving ability.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills (Dutch & English).
- A commitment to learning in a tax technology environment.
