The architectural historian career pathprovides the opportunity to work on projects that require compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and other federal, state, and local cultural resource regulations.
In this hybrid position, you will work with a nationwide team of cultural resources professionals.The Senior Architectural Historian confidently develops strategies for compliance with federal, state, and local cultural resources regulations and solutions for complex projects. You willinterface with clients and coordinate consultation with State Historic Preservation Officers, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, Native American tribes, and multiple state and federal agencies. You will also prepare proposals and cost estimates, provide technical reviews of deliverables, provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level employees, and serve as a mentor within the cultural resources group.
- Master’s Degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Public History, Architecture, or a related field.
- Minimum 10 years of professional experience in historic preservation or a related field.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Proficient reading architecture and engineering plans.
- Oral and written English communication skills.
- Must be willing and able to travel nationwide, as needed, approximately 15 percent of time.
- Documentation and research experience, including Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record documentation, historical contexts, and NRHP eligibility determinations and effects assessments.
- Expertise with the NHPA Section 106 consultation process.
- Experience writing and applying agreement documents.
- Experience working in the consulting environment, able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and be responsive to both internal and external clients.
- Knowledge of and experience with ‘recent past’ resources.
- Working knowledge of GIS and mobile data collection applications, such as Google Earth and ArcGIS Field Maps.
- Experience preparing proposals and cost estimates.
- Experience providing technical reviews of deliverables.
Other Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with NEPA and Section 4(f) of the U.S. Department of Transportation Act
- Experience with transportation and infrastructure projects, including FHWA and FRA
