Your Role and Responsibilities

  • System Architecture definition is a crucial element in the development of IBM Z mainframes. The detailed definitions of new functions and instructions enable complete and correct implementations, thereby minimizing opportunities for miscommunication and inconsistent designs across subsystems. Members of the IBM Z System Architecture team are considered Subject Matter Experts in their respective areas of expertise. They work with hardware, firmware, and software technical leads to define new instructions and functions, document the detailed operation of these functions, and lead the design reviews to ensure complete implementation descriptions with no ambiguity.
    As the IBM Z Systems Hardware Architect you will be working with a team of 4-5 innovative and exceptional professionals who are passionate about developing the architecture of the current and future IBM Z systems based on competitive industry landscape, emerging industry trends and directions, challenges and issues seen in prior generations and client needs. Each member of the team is a subject matter expert in a certain area of IBM System Z such CPU, Security, AI, IO & network interfaces, Coupling etc and work with the development and product teams associated with that particular area to develop the architecture of the IBM Z system.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • MS/PhD degree in Computer Eng, Computer Science or Computer Architecture and/or 2 years of relevant work experience with knowledge of operating system internals including device drivers and I/O interfaces and protocols, processor micro-architecture, cache and memory hierarchy, hypervisor design, and virtualization are among the highly desired skills.
  • Requires good technical communications skills, including written communications, good negotiating skills, and the ability to “see the big picture” in terms of understanding the system level implications, such as system performance, of designs under consideration.


Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Candidates should also have a working knowledge of the competitive landscape, emerging industry trends and directions, and customer requirements in the mainframe space. By their nature, these positions offer the potential for significant patent and publishing activity.
