Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience
  • 8+ years’ experience designing power infrastructure design for datacenters.
  • 6+ years’ experience direct experience with onsite power generation for datacenters (natural gas engines, solar, wind or fuel cell)
  • 6+ years’ experience on the design of microgrid including at least BESS, and one of solar/wind/fuel cell sources(10MW or larger)
  • Registered Professional Engineer/Licensed Engineer

  • Professional Engineering License or the ability to get a Professional Engineering License within 2 years.
  • 4+ years of experience with data center or mission-critical distribution systems, including preparing detailed specifications and design documents.
  • History and track record of working on large (>100 Megavolt-Amperes) power system/distribution systems.
  • Experience managing both internal and external vendors, with a proven ability to manage and monitor progress to ensure objectives are achieved for outsourced project efforts.
  • Direct experience of working with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and/or Fuel Cell vendors (Solid Oxide or other Fuel Cell technologies).
  • Experience with power system analysis and engineering software packages (Electrical Transient Analyzer Program (ETAP), Power Systems Analysis Software (SKM), EasyPower, etc.).

Responsibilities
  • Represent Data Center Engineering (DCE) in the design and delivery of new, existing, or leased sites with new onsite generation sources (e.g., natural gas engines, fuel cells, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)).
  • Possess extensive knowledge of new energy resources, including fuel cells, solar, wind, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and nuclear.
  • Lead all backup power discussions, both internally and externally.
  • Serve as the primary Data Center Engineering (DCE) contact for impact assessments on site availability and reliability with the addition of new energy sources.
  • Engage with new energy source vendors to exchange information, evaluate product availability and reliability, and provide early assessments of integration with our power infrastructure.
  • Lead design changes and collaborate with Low Voltage (LV), Medium Voltage (MV), and High Voltage (HV) electrical engineers to integrate new energy sources into our infrastructure.
  • Act as the Data Center Engineering (DCE) point of contact for all Chief Technology Officer (CTO) office plans regarding new energy integrations.
  • Lead discussions with external or Microsoft (MSFT) lease teams for the evaluation or addition of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), various fuel cell technologies, solar, or wind to Microsoft (MSFT)-owned or leased sites.
  • Direct engineering consultants in the detailed design of distribution systems.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines on associated controls and overall electrical distribution and topology for new campus power systems.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for all escalations related to onsite generation questions.
  • Design power distribution schematics, protection and automation schemes, basis of designs, etc., for the integration of alternative energy sources with campus power distribution systems.
  • Address technical questions about different parts of our data center power infrastructure, from Low Voltage (LV) to High Voltage (HV).
  • Innovate, redesign, or modify existing proposals to align with Microsoft (MSFT) sustainability goals.
