What to Expect

As a vehicle systems engineer, you are responsible for the dimensional quality of your system from the first concept of the design team to the introduction to mass production. In this context a system is defined as a group of parts, assemblies, functions, interfaces & processes that constitute a complex whole, such as “Front-End” or “Rear-End”. Your field of work stretches across the whole vehicle manufacturing process, including stamping, body shop, paint, and general assembly. As vehicle systems engineer, you will be looking for smart and efficient ways to achieve fit & finish targets, solve manufacturing issues and improve current processes.

You will work together with cross functional teams and departments in the Giga Factory Berlin and other Giga Factories. To achieve your objectives, you will review designs, drawings, and concept ideas under the scope of dimensional quality and manufacturing feasibility & efficiency. You will establish tolerance and production strategies to meet requirements and to deliver vehicle quality excellence. Together with your team, you will also support global teams with your expertise for assembly and setting strategies that connect the manufacturing requirements with the design wants. You will discuss and work on complex manufacturing processes with cross functional teams from all shops on all levels of the organization. Your collaboration skills and deep understanding of manufacturing and design requirements will help you to make the right decisions. During a new model launch, the team will play a leading role in problem solving.

What You’ll Do

You will become the subject matter expert of your system; you will be the first point of contact for multiple teams inside the Gigafactory and others. You will conduct complex analysis with data, such as CMM measurements, 1D tolerance stack ups, 3D variation analysis, CAD or real parts and vehicles, to identify root causes and develop interim and long-term countermeasures. You will design and execute trials to support your investigations. In this role, you will be part of multiple task force teams, contribute with your analysis or lead your own projects, cascade tasks and report on progress.

To achieve this, you will:

  • Identify risks and define mitigating measures. In case of deviations and problems you systematically apply problem solving methods and make sure that solutions are implemented in a timely manner
  • Conducting, analyzing & evaluating production trials
  • Reviewing/Evaluating design concepts including CAD-Design, Drawings, GD&Ts and assembly processes regarding manufacturing feasibility, efficiency and potential quality risks
  • Create 1D tolerance stack up and 3D variation analysis, as concept and process validation
  • Create comprehensive and conclusive documentations.
  • Develop assembly & setting strategies based on your analysis for body shop & general assembly
  • Support development and implementation of gauges, fixtures & setting jigs with internal & external supplier
  • Report regularly on status & results to relevant stakeholders
What You’ll Bring
  • Engineering degree in related field OR equivalent experience (Master’s degree in related field is highly preferred)
  • 3-5 years of experience in automotive manufacturing BIW or General Assembly
  • Experience in automotive development is a plus
  • General understanding of the product life cycle (automotive)
  • Relevant vehicle launch experience is a plus
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to rapidly grasp complex problems
  • Fundamental understanding of manufacturability, process design, process validation, and assembly methods.
  • Profound understanding of process technology and experience with manufacturing processes (e.g. stamping, die casting, injection molding), preferably in high volume production
  • Fundamental production operations knowledge - basic understanding of production line operations and production methods of entire vehicle systems
  • Very good CAD skills (Catia V5, V6), execute swift CAD studies and derive 3D proposals and sketches
  • Deep knowledge of tolerance management, statistical tolerancing, tolerance stack-up & variation analysis (DVA)
  • Ability to interpret GD&T drawings and CAD models and evaluate them in the manufacturing and assembly process context
  • Experience with 3DCS Variation Analyst (DVA) is a plus
  • Gauge and checking Fixture design and validation experience is a plus
  • Maintain flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities and assignments, coping with rapidly changing information
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-cultural environment with cross-functional teams, and to collaborate cohesively with co-workers, while demonstrating initiative and drive
  • Strong communication skills. Well versed with common workplace software (e.g Jira, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Kronos, SAP)
