Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work towards completing?
Within your first 6 months
You will build trust with VRG researchers and develop professional working relationships with various stakeholders within the VCF organization.
You will develop a deep understanding of the VCF and Private AI roadmaps as well as the ongoing research projects supporting VCF product differentiators.
You will develop a mid-to-long-term research vision and agenda that is poised for significant internal product impact as well as external impact on the research community.
After 6 months+
You will be responsible for driving the research agenda and working with the research team and other VCF stakeholders.
You will be guiding and mentoring researchers in achieving impact and progressing their career paths, and acting as a champion of their work both internally and externally.
You will manage the research group’s objectives, results, and performance within the processes set by your manager.
You will drive multiple product outcomes on a continual basis, leading the transfer of new approaches and technologies derived from research into shipping product features.
The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
Your role will be to lead and inspire a group of top researchers to excel in their roles with the responsibility to investigate new technologies, develop ideas that create meaningful differentiators for our products, and advance thestate-of-the-art.
You will create an extraordinary research environment in which the whole is greater than the sum of the parts by finding ways to synthesize multiple research threads into larger agendas that create new technology opportunities for product and research impact. You will guide VRG researchers through agenda-setting leadership in their respective research areas and seek out applications for key research advances that will create significant short-term and long-term differentiators for the VCF business.
You will establish productive working relationships with senior R&D staff to: understand the priorities of each engineering group; find opportunities for VRG engagement; and facilitate such engagements to expedite taking research to product/service, establish champions within the business units, etc.
You will mentor VRG researchers, guiding their career growth and professional development, including their stature within the Company and within the external research community. Don’t just be their manager – be their champion.
As a key member of the research community, informed by your own research and technology transfer record, you will establish strong collaborative projects with external academic researchers and projects as appropriate.
You will interact with customers to learn about the challenges they face and to create opportunities for the early dissemination of research results/artifacts through PoCs, etc.
You will help get VRG messages out to: the research community, prospective employees, industry analysts, customers, developers, etc. This includes the development of collateral, distribution of research artifacts (e.g., OSS), external speaking by VMware researchers, and participation in VMware Explore and other industry forums.
You will model our values and actively contribute to the health, fun, and vibrancy of the VRG.
Job Requirements
Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics or a discipline directly related to your area of research expertise.
15+ years of work experience in the technology industry, with minimum of 5 years in management.
Demonstrated ability to lead and guide new technologies from initial concept to shipping product
This role is onsite in Palo Alto, California.
Compensation and Benefits
The annual base salary range for this position is163,000 - $260,000
This position is also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus in accordance with relevant plan documents, and equity in accordance with equity plan documents and equity award agreements.
