Amazon Robotics Global Robotics Design Services Team is seeking a Principal Safety Engineer who will lead and govern Design for Safety to ensure every AR product is safe throughout its lifecycle. This role will define and drive requirements for safety excellence in design for testing, manufacturing, deployment, operation and maintenance for all products throughout the product development process (PDP).
In this technical safety role, you will functionally partner internally with HW/SW Core Engineering, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Deployment, GSS, Maintenance and Operation teams to drive prevention through design safety conformance, and safety support of the products being deployed in the network. Role will require travel approximately 50% of the time.Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Establish global and/or regional safety design requirements and specifications for all parts of the product lifecycle that meets or exceeds regulatory and harmonized industry standards, and communicate to technical engineering teams and OEMs/Integrators/Suppliers
• Define clear safety artifacts and deliverables to demonstrate requirements and verify requirements are met for each phase gate in the PDP
• Define and drive mechanisms to assess and measure success for safety in design for compliance, manufacturing, testing, deployment, operation and maintenance
• Develop and influence safety and compliance strategy for products in the early stages of PDP. Make use of strong skills for building alignment between internal and external partners on product safety goals, balancing the needs of the many stakeholders involved, including considerations on safety, security, reliability, cost, and maintainability
• Analyze risks, research appropriate expertise required, identify resources, and support development of mitigation strategies to resolve design issues
• Analyze data across the network where critical product failures have occurred and continually drive safety design improvements including changing requirements for new products and implementing safety related retrofits when needed
• Collaborate internally and externally to ensure requirements remain current, reflect the latest thinking, and ensure we remain best in class as we strive to be the earth’s best employer
• Contribute to developing and implementing safety norms and procedures in ways that is scalable
• Contribute to building a safety culture that enables our technical engineering teams to develop safe and compliant products, systems and solutions
• Guide senior leadership in technical understanding of safety risk and safety design requirements
• Communicate organizational-level risks to all level of leadership and set strategy and technical priorities
• Partner, maintain and leverage industry partnerships to support safety engineering programs.

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, safety or related field
• 10+ years’ experience in safety engineering programs in automation, manufacturing or production environment
• Experience working within a global company, with global or multi-country responsibilities
• Deep knowledge and experience performing machine design risk assessment, functional safety analysis and electrical safety evaluations
• Deep knowledge and understanding of certification bodies (National Recognized Test Laboratory (NRTL) and Notified Bodies) for approvals that comply with local, national and international regulations
• Deep knowledge of International and EU/NA Standards such as EU Machinery Directive, ISO, IEC, ANSI, NFPA, UL, OHSA, CFR, NFPA, ANSI, FCC
• Strong ability to represent, verbally and in writing, technical information, risk levels, complex decisions, and potential solutions in clear simple language to business and other stakeholders to enable decision making
• Demonstrated ability to be flexible, adapting the approach to meet the needs of customers, business and program stakeholders, and engineering teams involved
• Able to think big, insist on high standards and deliver results
• Ability to self-manage priorities and deliverables. Flexible in responding to changing demands, goals, timelines, and priorities
• Ability to collaborate and lead in a flexible, detail-oriented, fast-paced team environment in a changing and growing organization

• Master’s degree preferred in related engineering field
• Functional Safety Technician or Engineer Certification or Certified Machinery Safety Expert
• Experience participating on relevant standard development committees (i.e. ISO, IEC, Machinery Directive) and other industry groups
