About the role:

In this exciting role, you will work in the Interventional Spine space to support the development of single use disposable surgical instruments for use in the spine and surrounding anatomy. You will independently conduct development work as part of a major research and/or development project. You will receive minimal technical direction/review on broad scope or complex projects. You will be viewed as an expert in one or more in-house technologies.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Responsibility for development of single use disposable surgical tools for spinal surgery. Provide competitive advantage in performance, cost & quality.
  • Leading design & research investigations important to product design (computational, preclinical, and clinical studies).
  • Leveraging subject matter expertise in design for injection molding, metals, catheter, or other similar area of focus to advance product design and development.
  • Leveraging subject matter expertise in sterilization, biocompatibility, and shelf life to advance design and development schedules.
  • Organizing, planning, tracking and close out design problems associated w/product performance in engineering, manufacturing, and the field.
  • Providing technical leadership for engineers and technicians. Coordinating design, documentation, implementation, test, and production release activities.
  • Developing specs, designs, schedules, and test plans related to product development activities and product upgrades.
  • Participating in specifying, identifying, and hiring the engineering and technical talent necessary to meet the project objectives.
  • Using standard design processes to support product development and improve productivity. Facilitate process improvement within a specified discipline (e.g., design methodologies, standards & tool evaluation).
  • Working with the Regulatory Dept to ensure that design and test specs for the system meet or exceed all applicable regulatory standards.
  • Participating in and present at department level meetings, project status and problem-solving results.
  • Participating in budgeting process by providing input to direct supervisor relating to assigned project needs.
  • May provide oversight of Manufacturing Site for Quality, Manufacturing, and Project related activities.
  • Travel is estimated at 20% which will mostly be between BSC sites but will include vendor, cadaveric labs, and physician visits.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of design/development experience in the medical device industry OR M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum 4 years of design/development experience in the medical device industry OR 8+ years of work-related experience in the medical device industry in a Sr. R&D role capacity.
  • Experience with leading design & research investigations important to product design (computational, preclinical, and clinical studies).
  • Experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD system(s).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Orthopedic or Spine devices a plus.
  • Experience with Single use disposable tools a plus.
  • Experience with sterilization, biocompatibility, shelf-life testing a plus.

The anticipated annualized base pay range this full time position working at this location will be from
$109,900 - $208,800, plus annual bonus target (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements) and the value of core and optional employee benefits being offered at Boston Scientific (BSC), which can be reviewed at
