We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Process Integration Engineer to join our Photonics Platform Business Group with a focus on the area of optical interconnect and co-packaged optics. This position is in Applied Materials META Center at Albany, NY. As a Process Integration Engineer, you will be responsible of developing and optimizing process flows of optical and photonics devices as owner. You are expected to be highly detail-oriented and sharp minded in risk identification and mitigation. You will also be the first respondent of the device test and characterizations to drive flow iterations to improve the performance, yield, and reliability. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including design, process, and equipment engineers, to drive continuous improvement and ensure seamless integration of processes throughout the development and manufacturing lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities:

· Own, manage, and drive technical programs/ project, report out timely status and interface with variousleading to completion.

· Interface with partner foundries to define, start, and drive JDPs to completion at high pace.

· Develop, optimize, and own process flows, ensuring the highest level of product performance, yield, and reliability.

· Collaborate with design, process, and equipment engineers to define and implement process integration strategies and methodologies.

· Manage integration lots across multiple sites.

· Collect on-wafer data, perform analysis, and provide outcome, learnings and plan for fast learning cycles.

· Stay updated with the latest advancements, industry trends, and competitor status and apply knowledge to drive innovations.

Basic Qualifications:

· Master or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics or a related field; Ph.D. preferred.

· 7-10 years of work experience in semiconductor processing. Proven experience in process integration, preferably R&D within a high-volume manufacturing foundry environment.

· Deep knowledge of semiconductor module processes used in FEOL transistors and BEOL interconnect, including lithography, etch, deposition, electroplating, CMP, wet clean, inline and failure analysis metrology.

· Proficient in statistical data analysis and process optimization and control techniques (e.g., Design of Experiments, SPC, JMP).

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

· Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications:

· Direct experience of managing or working with foundry PDKs, from VLSI layout design, DRC, LVS, to photomask tape-out procedure is a plus.

· Direct experience of BEOL Cu interconnect e-test and reliability test is a plus.

· Knowledge of wafer-level packaging (e.g. through silicon via, hybrid bonding, wafer bonding and thinning) is a plus.

· Knowledge of Si photonics is a plus.

· Direct experience of SiView MES system is a plus.

· Demonstrates in-depth and/or breadth of expertise in own discipline and broad knowledge of other disciplines within the function

· Anticipates business and regulatory issues; recommends product, process or service improvements

· May lead functional teams or projects with moderate resource requirements, risk, and/or complexity. Guide and train junior engineers.

What you will do:

  • Own the resilience testing roadmap for vLLM and llm-d: define resilience indicators, prioritize fault scenarios, and establish go/no-go gates for releases and CI/CD

  • Design GPU/accelerator-aware fault experiments that target vLLM and the stack beneath it (drivers, GPU Operator/DevicePlugin, NCCL/collectives, storage/network paths, NUMA/topology)

  • Build an automated harness (preferably extending krkn-chaos (https://github.com/krkn-chaos/krkn) ) to run controlled experiments with scoped blast radius, and evidence capture (logs, traces, metrics)

  • Integrate fault signals into pipelines (GitHub Actions or otherwise) as resilience gates alongside performance gates

  • Develop detection and diagnostics: dashboards and alerts for pre-fault signals (e.g., vLLM queue depth, GPU throttling, P2P downgrades, KV-cache pressure, allocator fragmentation)

  • Triage and root-cause resilience regressions from field/customer issues; upstream bugs and fixes to vLLM and llm-d

  • Explore and experiment with emerging AI technologies relevant to software development and testing, proactively identifying opportunities to incorporate new AI capabilities into existing workflows and tooling.

  • Publish learnings (internal/external): failure patterns, playbooks, SLO templates, experiment libraries, and reference architectures; present at internal/external forums

What you will bring:

  • 3+ years in reliability, and/or performance engineering on large-scale distributed systems

  • Expertise in systems‑level software design

  • Expertise with Kubernetes and modern LLM inference server stack (e.g., vLLM, TensorRT-LLM, TGI)

  • Observability & forensics skills with experience with Prometheus/Grafana, OpenTelemetry tracing, eBPF/BPFTrace/perf, Nsight Systems, PyTorch Profiler; adept at converting raw signals into actionable narratives.

  • Fluency in Python (data & ML), strong Bash/Linux skills

  • Exceptional communication skills - able to translate raw data into customer value and executive narratives

  • Commitment to open‑source values and upstream collaboration

The following is considered a plus:

  • Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, AI, or a related field

  • History of upstream contributions and community leadership, public talks or blogs on resilience, or chaos engineering

  • Competitive benchmarking and failure characterization at scale.

The salary range for this position is $127,890.00 - $211,180.00. Actual offer will be based on your qualifications.

  • Serve as primary plant continuous improvement subject matter expert and be involved in the design and sustainment of plant systems

  • Supporting and interacting with customers and suppliers through complaint investigations, resolution, and trending

  • Ensuring the commercialized product design intent and product integrity is retained as materials, processes, methods, and specifications change

  • Troubleshooting, investigating, and analyzing for non-conforming product testing and disposition

  • Providing Quality Engineering support for global product launches and change management projects

  • Establishing and cultivating a network of support (EHS, laboratory, quality, plant engineering, business supply chain, engineering, etc..) to facilitate completion of assignments and performance of assigned areas.

  • Enhance plant PPU in cellulose manufacturing to improve and sustain production of high-quality products

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (completed and verified prior to start)

  • Three (3) years of professional experience as a process/manufacturing/lean engineer, or quality engineer in a private, public, government or military environment

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Experience in a chemical, textile, paper or similar manufacturing environment

  • Ability to understand and interpret analytical chemical test results

  • Experience with statistical analysis of process data and establishing process/product control standards

  • Familiarity with change management processes

  • Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter and strong influencing skills for working in dynamic plant environment

  • Professional certification, such as Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) through American Society for Quality (ASQ)

  • Experience working with established quality standards, such as ISO 9001

  • Experience leading or actively participating in Quality Audits

  • Experience with lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, tier systems and/or layered process audits

  • Experience leading kaizen activity
