Payroll Assistant - Cork (Tax)

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation and processing of payrolls for clients, under supervision.
  • Support the team in ensuring payroll returns are complete, accurate, and submitted on time.
  • Help maintain and update employee payroll records.
  • Respond to basic payroll-related queries from clients and employees, escalating complex issues as needed.
  • Assist with payroll reconciliations and the preparation of standard payroll reports.
  • Learn to use payroll software and technology platforms (e.g., Quantum/QPOSS, Excel).
  • Work closely with team members to deliver a high level of client service.
  • Adhere to internal controls and best practices to ensure data accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Stay informed about changes in Irish payroll legislation and Revenue guidelines.

Skills & Experience

  • 0–2 years of experience in payroll, finance, or a related field (internships or part-time roles welcome).
  • Interest in developing a career in payroll and tax.

  • IPASS qualified

  • Aptitude and interest in learning new skills

Your new role description

Reporting to the Central Finance Manager and working closely with HR and an outsourced service provider, this role will primarily be backfilling the BAU aspects of Payroll and to a lesser extent, Grants Administration.

  • Responsible for the processing of fortnightly Payroll and deductions for staff and pensioners (approx. 300 and growing)
  • Ensuring and driving compliance and adherence to the policies set down by Revenue.
  • Prepare necessary reconciliations and returns such as Pension and CSO in line with deadlines.
  • Prepare high quality reports and ad-hoc returns to external stakeholders, such as the Department of
  • Transport and other Freedom of Information requests.
  • Providing inputs relating to Payroll for cash flow forecasting of payments
  • Key point of contact for the Department of Transport, C&AG, internal and external stakeholders including HR, Revenue and external service providers providing efficient & effective support where required.
  • Contribute to a strong compliance culture by ensuring robust internal controls and audit standards are achieved and maintained.
  • Drive existing and new policies and procedures.
  • Input into the preparation of the annual audit, financial statements, and budget process
  • Staff mentoring & management where required.
  • Support the grant administration process and manage any miscellaneous income streams. This will involve coordination with multiple stakeholders.
  • Collaborate on projects as part of a continuous improvement program, including the utilisation of technology and financial systems to streamline business processes. Coordinate and assist in the development of Finance Systems upgrades, enhancements, and process developments both within the team and related control cycles.
  • Any other duties that may be assigned to the role.


Requirements for the Role

  • Hold a minimum of a NFQ degree level 7 qualification.
  • Have at least 5 years relevant (Irish Payroll) experience with three of those years in a finance role
  • Strong MS Office and MS Excel skills
  • A team player with strong organisational and time management skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Capacity to proactively and constructively contribute to team tasks.
  • Strong stakeholder management and ability to build rapport, effectively communicate to various finance and non-finance personnel and maintain confidentiality and integrity.
  • A ‘can-do’ and flexible approach with the ability to organise and prioritise workloads to meet deadlines.
  • Strong MS Office and MS Excel skills.

What will I be doing

Typical activities include the following:

  • Working under the supervision of Associate Directors, Directors or Partners within Strategy and Transactions as well as other Ernst & Young departments in both Ireland and internationally on the following assignments:

  • Apply and document complex valuations methodologies.
  • Design, develop and document complex business models.
  • Review Excel models under supervision and arrive at preliminary conclusions.
  • Understand, manipulate and interpret financial data and client information, drawing appropriate conclusions.
  • Carry out relevant analysis and present your findings (both written and orally).
  • Gathering, verifying and analysing information to formulate views.
  • Day to day progression of assignments to include; planning, preparing and reviewing various forms of deliverables to include reports and presentations.
  • A focus on anticipating and identifying risks that require escalation and subsequently escalating these risks to more senior staff as appropriate.
  • Working closely with colleagues you will ensure that work is properly executed, documented and concluded in compliance with our Quality & Risk Management guidelines.

Technical skills requirements

  • Ideally you will have an accounting qualification - CA or equivalent; a sound grasp of Irish GAAP and/or IFRS and financial accounting, combined with a high level of business awareness and a strong understanding of the factors that drive financial performance
  • Highly numerate with a sound grasp of Excel and a natural interest in using it to help clients to better understand their business or to make better business decisions
  • A track record in valuations and/or financial modelling, experience of working in a professional services environment, and exposure to high profile transactions, would all be a distinct advantage
  • Familiarity with key valuation methodology and approaches and/or the ability to develop or formally review financial models is a pre-requisite
  • Additional technical skills such as Visual Basis or SQL and other programming languages would be an advantage

Additional skills requirements

  • Qualified with ACA, ACCA or equivalent qualification
  • 3 years relevant experience
  • Minimum 2.1 degree, numeric subjects preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills and client focus are important, as well as attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrates organization and self management skills
  • Pro-actively manage own development
