Job Description


Reporting to a Practice Leader in Alberta, Counsel II handles assigned insurance legal matters, represents TD Insurance or its policyholders in civil litigation matters involving claims for damages and compensation for personal injury or property damage of varying value with legal issues of ranging complexity.


Hybrid work model. This position will report out of the Calgary office.


Main Responsibilities

  • Develop and revise appropriate legal strategy for questioning, investigation, handling and trial of cases.

  • Communicate with TD Insurance analysts and insured clients, as appropriate.

  • Conduct necessary and appropriate Questionings, applications, trials, and mediations.

  • Research the law applicable to cases or matters.

  • Draft legal documents, pleadings, applications and legal factums as required.

  • Remain current with developments in the law.

Job Requirements

  • Completion of law school with LLB and admission to the bar in Alberta.

  • 5+ years' experience as a lawyer with a background in insurance defense litigation or other litigation, including personal injury or general litigation.

  • Knowledge of legal and court documents and procedures.

  • Knowledge of standard office equipment and word processing.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Architect will design the solution architecture end-to-end, follow enterprise architecture guidelines, work primarily within projects/products, contribute to strategic plans as needed, and lead project/product architecture blueprints at high and low level.

CUSTOMER

  • Apply a multi-disciplined expertise with database, application, client tiers, layering of software, build, test and deploy strategies to create the overall design of software (including applications, infrastructure, middleware) and guide how the sub-components are developed by different teams
  • Elevate focus on applications and data as differentiators for the customer experience, anchored in sound foundational elements of Infrastructure and Platforms
  • Advise on suitability of technology stacks todefine principles/ key constraints for solution components; rallies the team around these principles to determine security / scalability approach, and impact assessments for future design
  • Monitor and report on progress and collaborate broadly with other practitioners, including designers, engineers, and other applicable business stakeholders to ensure the necessary features for the products and applications are developed within assigned portfolio
  • Design tests that will be implemented to keep the software functional; supports issue analysis and fix activities during test phases, as well as production issue resolution

SHAREHOLDER

  • Set service-level objectives (SLO) and exercise key decision rights of the FSA role
  • Focus on reliability, scalability, and the development of the architectural infrastructure; including highly complex and scalable systems​
  • Develop observability standards to ensure that production systems operate under known conditions and transparently provides these measurements to anticipate when errors or failures can arise
  • Lead interaction with governance and control groups, (e.g. regulatory / operational risk, compliance and audit) to provide subject matter expertise and consult on risk issues related to architectural technology and tools
  • Lead or contribute to cross-functional / enterprise initiatives as an organizational or subject matter expert helping to identify risk / provide guidance for significant and complex situations
  • Monitor and report on the status of the products / projects and applications within assigned product, ensuring projects are compliant with technology domain architecture, and review in-progress activity against technology architecture and development standards
  • Foresee architectural issues / gaps and identify emerging industry trends to recommend value-added architectural improvements that will alleviate technology debt and build resilient solutions

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

  • 10+ years relevant experience developing a variety of platforms
  • 7+ years of solution architecture experience ideally in the Insurance industry
  • Demonstrated experience with owning and leading architectural solutions in a complex environment
  • Strong knowledge of Guidewire Suite, including Guidewire Cloud Platform, Policy Center, Billing Center, ideally with relevant certifications with prior experience integrating with Guidewire
  • Understanding of DevSecOps and experience with Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery, Pair programming and / or Test-Driven Development is an asset (i.e., ability to review or provide feedback to Unit, Integration and Functional Tests)
  • Familiarity with SAFe agile methodology an asset
  • Knowledge of AWS/Azure an asset

Legal Business Partner Support:

  • Manage and oversee a diverse portfolio of legal matters impacting the Canadian organization, including but not limited to purchase and/or divestment of assets, alliance management, agreement negotiation and drafting, advising on local laws, legal counselling, litigation matters, regulations, and company policies.
  • Act as a strong and reliable business partner interfacing with cross-functional units and attending various business meetings to provide legal input.
  • Oversee external legal counsel, manage legal spend, and connect issues and opportunities across the business to drive the company's success.
  • Support the Executive Counsel as needed and provide legal advice and support to the Company's various business units in the Canadian business.
  • All other Business Partner duties as required.

Non-IP Litigation and Regulatory Compliance:

  • Manage important non-IP litigation including but not limited to HR and employee matters, mediations, employment and labour standard issues.
  • Participate in business meetings and provide training on issues related to rebate and customer contracting, formulary placement, and payer agreements.
  • Review and update all organization policies and procedures annually.
  • Support audits of customer utilization and compliance with rebate agreements.
