As an Optical Engineer, you will help invent and evaluate optical systems and components. You will also be responsible for designing, constructing, testing and improvement of optical systems and products. You will be knowledgeable with technology related to optics, optical components, and lenses; designing systems, modeling and analyzing physical optics; applying mathematical techniques for optical solutions; and testing optical systems.
Optical engineering requires creativity and technical knowledge; therefore, those working in this field must be able to use various techniques to develop innovative solutions. Living in a technology-dependent world, optical engineers have the opportunity to grow with some of the most cutting-edge technologies.
The optical engineer must have a strong understanding of physics and mathematics, as well as a comprehensive understanding of computer science, engineering and software to develop and design optical systems. Proficiency with software and programming languages, such as MATLAB, LabVIEW and C++, is also important. Furthermore, you must be able to work closely with others and work in teams to effectively test and analyze optical components.
